Stuck in a school bus...and surrounded by Bush supporters |
|

So today my class field trip's destination was right next to where Bush was giving a morning "speech" to his faithful in St. Petersburg. On the way downtown, we saw the presidential motorcade blasting North toward Tampa on I-275, so I thought the timing was good. We'd miss the guy.
When we got to our designation's parking lot, however, we had to wait in a long line of busses from other schools. And walking through the parking lot? Bush supporters (BS), leaving their morning prayer meeting. Tons of them. They all milled around the school busses, which weren't moving. The BSers were shouting and holding up Bush signs and we couldn't get away from them. They tapped on our windows. The kids in the bus clapped. But to me it was spooky.
I have always been very civil with BSers, and I am friends with a few, but I only see them alone or in very small groups. I had prided myself on being somewhat above the divided chasm our country is reported to be split by. But I have to tell you, I was surprised at the revulsion I felt at being surrounded by the Bush supporters. I talked to a few teacher acquaintances afterword, and they had felt the same way.
Spooky.

this year at the Western Washington State Fair, my husband and I noticed a ton of kids (Kids!) running around with BC stickers, signs and so forth. It was so weird to see 14 year olds running around pumping theirs fists and high fiving to bush. Turns out that a very popular Christian rock band was the grandstand feature that day (X-tain rock is not a scene I know much about, so I couldn't even tell you the name of the band).
The show was sold out, and my husband and i stood outside the grandstand to listen and see what the appeal was, and not only was it extremely bland arena rock, but with all the swaying with the hands up in the air, it seemed hypnotic (I hate to compare it to the Hitler youth rallies we see in the black and white films, but it did have that flavor of brainwashing).
I can't help but feel pity for these kids that are supporting a system and leader that is so unchristian like it would be funny if it were not really happening.
I bought a Kerry sign at the Democrat booth, and when i was carrying it out, several people gave me the thumbs up, as if these boosh youth had so intimidated them, they could only give their support silently. Like you say, scary and creepy.
