49. actually the story about the film is kind of interesting

in answer to your question - yes, it's been put on DVD, paired with Murnau's Nosferatu. But I haven't been able to find a copy anywhere...

That said -

The film was considered lost, long lost. The AFI had it in their list of top 10 lost films. No one thought there were any copies anywhere as at the time the theater owners shredded the film stock to recover the silver from the nitrate film. That and no one really worried about preservation.

So all that was kicking around were a few frames, one of which I poster here.

Turns out though that this man, Al Dettlaff, had a great grandmother who had a copy and used to screen it. She passed her films on to her son, then he to his son (Dettlaff's brother in law). That guy sold his collection in the 1950s, and Dettlaff bought it from that guy sometime later.

Dettlaff recognized a reproduced poster of the film and the image of Ogle on a magazine cover in the middle 1970s and realized he had the film, minus the title sequence (routinely cut off after a film was shown at a theater to prevent other theaters from stealing and showing it).

Dettlaff put a few copies on VHS in the early 80s with the text "Property of Al Dettlaff" in the middle of the screen for the entire running time. He later copyrighted it and put it on DVD.

The last time I checked, his company, LS Video, no longer had an active web page. I haven't bothered to check Amazon or anywhere else for it because even if I found a cheap copy I don't have the ready cash to spend on DVDs at the moment.
