According to a recent New Yorker profile, Lily Tomlin has, over the years, turned down more than a million dollars from companies that would like Ernestine to appear in commercials. Yet Lily, whose current revival of The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe is playing to sell-out crowds on Broadway, volunteered the not-so-smooth operator's services to PETA, free-of-charge.
