46. Ozzie's ode to marijuana
The best non-reggae tribute!

ALRIGHT NOW!
Won't you listen?

When I first met you, didn't realize
I can't forget you, for your surprise
you introduced me, to my mind
And left me wanting, you and your kind

I love you, Oh you know it

My life was empty, forever on a down
Until you took me, showed me around
My life is free now, my life is clear
I love you sweet leaf, though you can't hear

Come on now, try it out

Straight people don't know, what you're about
They put you down and shut you out
you gave to me a new belief
and soon the world will love you sweet leaf

26. No he played a show at the Coliseum
BTW- the Hampton Coliseum used to host some big ass acts* and the story as told by FM99 the local RAWK!!! station was that Dylan wrote it in the hotel he was staying at after a show.

That was the story.

*-Zeppelin once and the Dead were regulars, 3-4 shows every spring and fall. Isaw three Dead shows there.

11. Hits from the bong
Hits from the bong

Pick it, pack it,
Fire it up, Come along,
And take a hit from the bong,
Put the blunt down just for a second,
Don't get me wrong it's not a new method,
Inhale, Exhale,
Just got a ounce in the mail,
I like a blunt or a big fat bowl,
But my double barrel bong is gettin' me stoned,
I'm skill it, There's water inside don't spill it,
It smells like shit on the carpet,
Still it, goes down smooth when I get a clean hit,
Of the skunky funky smelly green shit,
Sing my song, puff all night long,
As I take Hits from the bong...

Hits from the bong y'all
Gonna get high,
Hits from the bong

Let's smoke that bowl, hit the bong,
And then take that finger off of that hole,
Plug it, unplug it,
Don't straaaain, I love you Mary Jane,
She never complains, when I hit Mary,
With that flame, I light up the cherry,
She's so good to me, when I pack a fresh bowl I clean the screen,
Don't get me stirred up the smoke, through the bubbling water,
Is Makin' it pure so I got ta', take my hit and hold it,
Just like Chong, I hit the bowl and I reload it,
Get my four-footer and bring it on...
As I take Hits from the bong,

Hits from the bong...
Gonna get high

Straighten your dick out...
Gonna get high...

That is the only explanation I have been able to come up with for Greenewood's signature piece.

I isn't booze 'cause that definitely isn't a drinkin' song.....now OUR National Anthem IS set to an English drinking song which I completely approve us though sometimes it can fuel the fire of us getting into wars that aren't even close to necessary but everyone would like to have a beer with a guy who supposedly doesn't drink anymore. Whatever.

19. as an ideological defense of weed smoking, i think Phish's 'Marijuana'
Edited on Tue Oct-19-04 09:29 PM by JibJab
is best.

"Well once upon a time in 1776 Thomas Jefferson signed his name on a piece of marijuana, and this document was a symbol of freedom and of liberty, at least for the rich, white, gentry. And time marched along, this plant that I referred to has been used for everything from medicine to the American flag. And now it seems to me that somewhere along the way things got messed up, yeah, messed up, for marijuana.

A gift of God to my brothers and me. Oh marijuana…the government wants to test me when I pee.

Well some say a conspiracy, ? chemical and ? paper industries combined to kill the competition, government hysteria, monopoly, and conflict of interest, with total impunity. Yeah, so, if you don't buy the conspiracy, just look at the reality that your tax dollars go to spray poison on the fields of a farmer in South America. And as an added bonus, your neighbor might be the proud recipient of that poison weed.

Oh marijuana…the government wants to test me when I pee. Oh marijuana…a gift of God to my brothers and me. Oh marijuana…you can't legislate your own morality. Oh marijuana…the government wants to test me when I pee.

Free from madness, chronic sadness, what is the half-life of bad propaganda? The policies fail, denied bail, you made him a demon now pay for his trip to prison. Hard to promote the status quote, but what is the shelf life of bad legislation? The hypocrite smirks, it's a moral disgrace as he reads from the law that was written about the same time that he had his last original thoughts. Men said he was dying and the nausea and the pain left him wasting away and unable to keep a meal down. So he tried everything prescription could obtain but to no avail. The side effects were worse than the pain. So now he breaks the law to use the one thing that seems to help him out. But the people say, “Oh he's just gettin high.” Not to change the subject but, didn't you ever wonder why getting high's a crime. Yeah a crime.

Oh marijuana…a gift of God to my brothers and me. Oh marijuana…now the government wants to test me when I pee. Oh marijuana…the government wants to test me when I pee. Oh marijuana…the government wants to test me when I pee. Oh marijuana…the government wants to test me when I pee. Oh marijuana…(this is the part where everybody would sing along) when I pee. "

47. A Funny Story About That Song
It was climbing the charts during my senior year in high school, when I was on the staff of my school's radio station - WJSV-FM, Morristown NJ. I was in the anteroom outside the studio one afternoon, waiting to start my show - a sophomore was running the board, and played that song.

When the record ended, he turned on the microphone and said, "Ya know, I have no idea what a toke is - if you know, please call me at 267-9040." And then he started the next record.

I opened the studio door and said, "You honestly don't know?"

Sophomore: "No, I don't."

Me: "Well, a toke is a drag off a marijuana cigarette."

Sophomore: "Oh."

Just then, the studio phone rang - it was our faculty adviser and station manager. He told the sophomore to turn control of the studio over to me and report to his office.....

27. I Like "Mexico" by Jefferson Airplane
but that's a minority opinion.
Owsley and Charlie, twins of the trade,
Come to the Poet's Room
Talking about the problems of the leaf,
And yes, it'll be back soon

There used to be tons of gold and green
Comin' up here from Mexico
A donde esta la planta, mi amigo, del sol?

But Mexico is under the thumb
Of a man we call Richard
And he's come to call himself king
But he's a small-headed man
And he doesn't know a thing
About how to deal for you

How to deal for you
There are millions of you now
I mean it's not as if you were alone
There are brothers everywhere
Just waiting for a toke on that gold
And God knows how far it can go

But thanks Uncle Charlie
For your Mexican smoke
You're a legend Owsley
For your righteous dope

There were a half a million people on the lawn
And we sang to the faces in the dark
How long must that damn race
Wait for the jailer's time to end?
How long must the Panther race
Wait for the iron bars to bend?
And no no no no no nobody waits
