Putting it away for a rainy day?
Some have accused me of having a survivalist side. I have a "compound" (as described by friends) and raise the majority of my own food. I am debt free, my goal is to become self-sufficient and to be able to weather any storm life throws my way.
Any more of you like that out there?

5. Thats one of the reasons
It seems as if the more you rely on the government, the more they mess with you. The reason I lean to the democratic side is that the repugs don't give a crap about the average citizen and try to impose the will of religious groups on us.
The more you prepare, the bigger the storm you can weather! I hope this is just a 4 yr repug storm!

2. how big is your compound?
i have foods in whole grain form in metal buckets. I have 1350 amp hours of 24 volt batt system with 1800 watts of Siemens 100 watt panels and a 7.5kw diesel generator with 300 gals of diesel with stabil in it. I have 100 gals of gasoline. Now, I paid 89 cents for the gas 2 years ago and treated it and it is great today. Run my homebuilt sawmill with it. I have 1000 gals of propane for cooking purposes, about say 8 years worth. I make my own tofu.....
think I win the survivalist nutjob award?

junker
hunkered down in WetternWashingtonState. Where it rains all the time. Or it used to prior to the onset of this year....but that is another thread for nutjobs who think the sun is going batshit and will fry us with the eletrical energy (a'la james mccanney's plasma discharge model of solar system interaction) when the 4 comets show up by May 15 of next year and isn't it odd that NASA (the Nat Astro/Space Security Agency( isn't saying a damn thing about those comets one of which is nearly Jupiterian in size....

6. Im in Tennessee
I have 15 acres and lease 85 adjoining. (hope to buy someday) For the most part I am raising cows, although I have chickens and hogs. Also grow my own personal produce. I have yet to go off the grid which is my ultimate goal, the solar equipment is expensive!

Junker, you are not alone. In my opinion, people might call us nutjobs, but when the power goes out, there is a food shortage, an economic catastrophy (Shrub might have already started it), or just long term unemployment, we will be comfortable nutjobs.

4. Kind Of
I pay cash for everything, buy bulk whenever I can and prefer to buy a manual and work on my car without outside help.

I also have a battery-powered Kenwood SW Reciever and a Dell Notebook fueled by Solar Cells and powered by Exide Deep-Cycle 12V batteries in an Apartment.

...Not to mention my 25+ year collection of "The Mother Earth News" when Dennis Burkeholder had something to say and "just" built it....

Just wish property values were sane enough in my area where I wouldn't have to travel 3+ hours a day plus another 8 to afford a garden....
