Poll question: What sport has the best team names?
I think CFL football or NHL hockey. Because the names are fairly original.

CFL
Roughriders
Stampeders
Eskimos
Allouttes
Argonauts

NHL
Maple Leafs
Red Wings
Canucks
Bruins

Baseball is good too
Red Sox
Yankees
Mariners

I hate all these teams named after animals - how boring can you get?

1. NFL, if only for the history
You can't beat the incredible history behind the NFL teams. The passion that comes out when you mention the Packers, Cowboys, 49ers, Bears, Eagles to someone.

2. You don't think it's the same with baseball?
I don't live in the US so I don't know.

Up here though, hockey teams are like relgion.

3. sure, but
of course mention Yankees or Red Sox and the person will either give you a beer or hit you. But beyond that, how many other teams besides the dodgers and the braves will bring out such intense passion. So many NFL teams have diehard fans across the country (i'm a niners fan living in PA).

5. There was this African tribe, I think it was the Masai...
Small villages would get together for the young men to compete in various kinds of events. The gave themselves team names like we do in the West.

Mostly it was things you'd expect, like:

The Lions

The Rhinos

The Cheetahs

The Eagles

Some of it was more of a hunter/gatherer third world country type thing, for example:

The Sleeping Sickness

The Diarrheas

My personal favorite was:

The Big Talkers
