there must be 50 ways to leave your lover
so, how do you pick the right way?

"get on the bus, gus," is cool, but where is the bus going?

"make a new plan, stan." huh-huh, but what's the plan???

"no need to be coy, roy." ????

how do DU lounge lizards leave their lovers?

2. The answer is easy if you take it logically
I'd like to help you in your struggle to be free
it's really not my habit to intrude
Furthermore
I hope my meaning won't be lost or misconstrued
But I'll repeat myself at the risk of being crude
There must be fifty ways to leave your lover

3. If I have to do it,
I do it clean and quick. No false hopes, no linger doubts. Never make it personal, never lie and never leave one lover for another. Always do it in person, and let them rant if they feel the need. People have a right to their pain, and a need for emotional closure.

But those are the rules I live by. Not the rules I believe are correct for everyone.

8. thanks, SO
but, no lies, ever? even if it might lessen the hurt, and do more good than harm? particularly if the "lover" being left is indeed loved, but it just isn't working out?

14. Well, again...these are just rules for me.
I do believe there are times when a while lie is appropriate. But if I've cared for someone deeply enough to be involved then it's (to me) disrespectful of the bond we've shared to end it with a lie. If it's just not 'working for me,' I tend to say "it's just not working for me."

The difficulty as I see it, is that if you've been close at all, most folks know when they're being sold a bill of goods. That's even more hurtful than just keeping your danged mouth shut.

4. The best way is to call the person...
... hold the phone up to your stereo and play "Free Bird."

11. Umm... What, exactly, is a "lover?"

I vaguely recall having had some of those "lovers" at various times in my life, but I can't seem to formulate a concrete image. So please refresh my memory. Thanks!
