Are you superstitious about where/how you watch sporting events?
For tonight, my friend (huge Sox fan) is really torn about where he is going to watch the game. You see, the Sox have won while he's been at 3 different locations, so he's not sure which location will bring them the best karma.

My other friend (also Sox fan) has been wearing the same sweatshirt every day since last week. (Yes it smells. No he doesn't care.)

Another friend (this one a Yankees fan) missed the first game that the Yanks won, so he's been listening to the games on the radio and refuses to watch the games on TV since he feels that he would jinx them.

Do you have any superstitions about sports? And why are there so many in baseball?

1. I am very much so.
I think the reason there are so many superstitions in baseball is because the game is A) old and richly historical and B) utterly unpredictable and difficult to plan for.

4. The players themselves have superstitions, don't they?
I've heard a lot about pitchers' superstitions.

I kinda collect them (people's superstitions). The Great Yaz of the Red Sox wore the same pair of lucky sox until they fell apart.

2. I don't have any superstitions
I can understand why people have them, but when you step back and think about it they are just plain silly.

10. I guess maybe it's a way to feel involved.
To feel like you're doing your part for your team. It's a helpless feeling when your team is losing and you're just sitting there and there's nothing you can do.

12. They are silly but
therapeutic. They help you deal with things you have no control over without despairing.

3. Very very much so. If the Packers score in the 1st quarter, it's okay
for me to watch the game. If they start losing it's time for me to start making lunch or dinner. And my little lion in a packer's jersey has to remain, untouched, on top of the T.V. throughout the season. My husband bought me a real Packers Favre jersey, but they lose when I wear it. So now I wear my old ratty reversible one. So far so good...we'll see....

What's that? No I am not f*cking neurotic!!! You take that back. ;)

5. Oh gawd yes
Every Sunday I get up and put on my Falcons jersey and drink coffee from my Falcons mug--I ONLY use the Falcons mug on Sundays when they have a game and I ONLY wear the jersey while the game is in progress. So far they're 5-1!:D

19. The jersey stays under glass
but I do wash the mug when I finish with it. Actually, I wash all my dishes as soon as I'm done with them--I just hate to have them pile up. Actually, I'm rambling, so I'll stop now. :)

13. Not at all
I try to react as normally as possible, when I start having routines my team I'm rooting for suddenly starts to fuck up.

21. that's how i am
my trying to avoid superstitions has become a sort of superstition. Also if i'm watching a game, especially a Marlins or Niners game and I put on a song and they start doing good i'll repeat the song over and over. though likewise, if I put on a song and they do bad, i'll never play it again until the game is over. That's why I'll never listen to acappela during a Marlins game.
Heh, guess I do have superstitions. :-)

17. i haven't changed my socks since sunday
seriousLy though, aLL these superstitous rituaLs are siLLy (and comforting - you feeL that you have some controL over the outcome) and in no way effect the game.

but then, i remember that time i was specificaLLy not going to the bathroom during game time because my team had won the first 2 games when i didn't break the seaL..... then the one day i rationaLized that i couLd go to the bathroom (because the game had gone into extra innings) i came back to see a baLL going through biLL buckner's Legs.

22. I'm a Cubs fan...I know watching a game will insure a loss!
And so do about 4 million others.

Wrigley Field can't hold the mojo available to confirm this.

23. I stopped watching sports in my mid-twenties, but until then I cheered...

...for the Raiders. Interestingly, one of the reasons I gave it up is that every time I actually watched a game, they would lose. It didn't matter if they were having a winning season or not. They would up and lose. The only time since then I've bothered to watch was the Superbowl game a few years ago and well, uh, they lost. :)

Other reasons I don't watch sports:

Edited out so as not to upset sports fans...
