However, it also starred the Roots. Henceforth, it gets my vote.

A beautifully filmed movie as well. The scene of the Klansmen riding over the horizon in front of a full moon was beautiful and chilling at the same time.

Danzel Washington may be the best American actor right now and I think this was his first great role.

8. Crooklyn

Spike's movies can sometimes be a passion play with no hope of redemption. Crooklyn was a departure from his other films. The storytelling in this film seems much truer.

9. I had to vote for Jungle Fever - gotta little thing for

Wesley...and Halle Berry was outstanding

No on Malcolm X - while I love Denzel, the movie didn't delve into what motivated Malcolm. It showed the things he did, but didn't really examine the man. His biography is so much more enlightening. As one example, in the movie, a white student asked Malcolm what she could do to help the cause and he said, "nothing." What the movie doesn't tell you is that he later regretted saying that to her. There are other examples, but that's the one that comes to mind.

I guess that's pretty typical for a movie, but it was still disappointing.

12. Spike's problem there is fitting a whole life into 3 hours

14. I totally agree. Between that and telling a story that really takes

place in someone's head is quite an undertaking. Alex Haley's book is one of my favorites. In fact I read it in one sitting. Therefore, even though the performances were great, I felt as though no one could walk away from that movie having a better understanding of Malcolm the man.

The book also explains his "feud" with Martin Luther King, Jr. and talks about how he felt about his famous quote about the "chickens coming home to roost."

See, I can be serious sometimes!

11. When I saw DTRT

I absolutely freaked out when Mookie threw the trash can. The tension in the theater was amazing. Everyone was astonished. It felt as if we were in the BK and our friend Radio Raheem had just been chocked to death.

It is an amazing film and probably the one I have bought on video more than any other. (VHS, LaserDisc, Criterion laser, DVD, Criterion DVD)

On second though I think I did the same with Robocop. (VHS, Laserdisc, Criterion Laser, DVD, Criterion DVD) And now I have to buy the remastered anamorphic DVD.

What about Clockers and 25th Hour. I loved both of those. I voted other.

16. I voted "School Daze" because it was deep and funny, but

the HBO documentary "4 Little Girls" broke my heart. I cried so hard watching all these people remember the girls who died in that church bombing.
The bombing was the final straw for a lot of whites who had been on the fence about civil rights. The blood of innocent children was just too much.
