13. From SC...
I wish you well and the speediest of recoveries. Remember me from our Citadel discussion?

I've had a difficult time as of late trying to explain to some local upstate high school students that the Confederate Flag is not heritage... But let's not go there now.

How's the weather up yonder? It's 75 and mostly sunny right now. I wish I could send you some to "perc" up your day.

Take care.

14. Hey there. Yes I do remember our talks..
Cold, falling temps right now 49 windy. Perfect October weather!

That "flag" is certainly not heritage (at least to me anymore). I was behind some asshole in traffic on Saturday. Dark blue pickup truck from New Hampshire. He had a "you know what" proudly displayed on his rear windshield.....right next to his peace sign sticker that read "Footprint of the American Chicken."

Nice, huh?

Wish the Red Sox luck tonight.

15. Go Sox Go !
Although I enjoy baseball, I have never had a favorite team. However, with what the BoSox have done over the past few nights, I will definitely have a team to support.

I was called a "traitor" for my "Veteran for Kerry" button the other day in the grocery store. I told this person that, like Kerry, I have put my butt on the line for his freedom to slander me. His response was to call me a "g-ddamned liberal" and then he walked away. Many times I have thought about doing what you did: moving elsewhere.

On a pickup from New Hampshire?

16. Yeah, go figure. Bunches of rednecks.
There was an older dude in the bank a few weeks ago with a "Veterans Against Kerry" button on his hat. Everyone was glaring at him cause he was an ass besides having that button on his head. Maybe you would like living in LIBERAL MASSACHUSETTS!

17. I don't know if I could handle the weather
I'm rather thin and have no natural insulation against the cold. I used to live in Germany while I was a graduate student and had a difficult time with the winters. Although I was like a child everytime it snowed.
However, I would probably enjoy the companionship of my neighbors.

18. You get used to the weather.
I am at the ppoint that I can not tolerate hot weather (anything over 90). Summers are perfect up her. And you are practically certain to have Democrats surrounding you.

19. Believe it or not....
Edited on Wed Oct-20-04 05:26 PM by Dzimbowicz
I am an avid bicyclist and my favorite time to go riding is when the temperture is 90 or higher. I believe that it purges my body of all the impurities. Also, I never use air-conditioning. Although Columbia is home, I spent my early childhood on the banks of the Edisto River in Colleton County in the days before AC was common, so I guess that is why I don't like AC.

When I studied in Germany my university was located in the former East Germany (Halle) and I thoroughly enjoyed the company of people who were "left" (they referred to themselves as Socialists, not Communists, something my USMC propaganda never told me) on the political scale.
I was "adopted" by a family whose son was a former fighter pilot for the East German Air Force. When I told him what my job was in the Marines, he realised that I would have been his target if a war had begun. We both broke down and embraced each other in friendship and forgiveness.

I came of age during the Watergate years and afterward Jimmy Carter had a significant effect on me politically and from then on I have voted mostly Democratic. However, residence in the former GDR and living and talking with people from another social, economic and political background moved me further to the left and convinced me of the corruption of certain types of capitalists.

One reward I do have teaching in the upstate is that I do get through to some of my students and get them to see another side to the world around them.

20. We have a lot in common...
I spent every summer on Edisto Beach. My family would leave Charleston the day school got out and we would return to the city right before school started. We had a great beach house and a big lot on the Yacht Basin, where I would sit on our dock a crab the day away. I sailed and waterskied constantly (until Jaws came out, then sadly, no more creek water for me.

The heat just never bothered me then.

Now, I am like a kid too when it snows. I can snow ski worth crap, but I love the cold and the snow.

Where on the Edisto were you?

21. How do I describe a remote location?
My father was an engineer for SCE&G and was involved with the construction of a power station near Canadys Crossroads (intersection of US 15 and SC 61), just upstream from the Colleton State Park. It was truly in the middle of nowhere! Our house was right on the river and had a magnificent view. We lived there from 1960 until 1966. Then my mother insisted that my sister and I attend school in Columbia and not Walterboro, which was where we were sent. From then on Columbia has been home.

I have only been in York County since 1999 because I needed a job. While in Columbia, I was never really bothered by red-necks or radical republicans. It has only been the past several years "up here" that the fundies and the radicals have really made themselves known to me. Maybe I was too isolated in graduate school at USC to notice.

Some more commonalities, yet different. My mother grew up in Columbia and I was born there. So, my family was directed more in that direction. However, our beach house was (and still is) located at Litchfield Beach in Georgetown County. I still spend most of the summer there and love the coastal region. Being a teacher, I am able to leave right after school lets out and return a few days beforehand. I do, however, return to Rock Hill (pronounced: Rock Hee-yull) to keep up appearances, namely to do some yard work and clean out the mail box.

I do frequent Charleston, especially during the summer, as one of my oldest friends resides there (the genuine SOB I referred to during our Citadel discussions). Although we grew up together in Columbia, his family are the real deal: single digit addresses and such (Tradd St. and Rutledge St.), you probably know the type.

BTW, HOW ABOUT THOSE SOX!!!!

22. That location sounds awesome to me!
Litchfield is really beautiful. My remaining close family live in Myrtle Beach. I have a great aunt who has a great home on Pawleys Island.
Man, this talk of SC is making me need to schedule a visit South after the election.

Those SOX by the way are awesome. Coupled with the Patriots, who could ask for more.

There is talk up here about a Kerry 'bounce" should the Red Sox win the World Series. That would just be icing on the cake.

Folks, the next 2 weeks in Boston are going to be awesome.

23. Not only do I hope the Sox win,
but their victory will be an omen of success in the election.

BTW, I've never been to Mass., however I have passed through en route to other locations. Twice my father and I spent the summer with his former college roommate in Maine. He has a house in the northeastern corner of the state. Even in July I found the lake water too cold for swimming. The only other time I passed through Mass, was en route to a vacation in Nova Scotia. The view from the interstate was very beautiful, but that has been my only experience in your state.
