HOLY SHIT! Jandek played a live show in Scotland Oct 17th!
NEWS: It is now confirmed that Jandek played a live set at the Instal.04 festival in Glasgow on October 17. He sang and played guitar, joined by Richard Youngs on bass and Alexander Neilson on drums. The performance was not publicized beforehand or even identified as it happened, so many of the people in the room didn’t know until later whom they had seen and heard. More information is at:

* http://www.livejournal.com/community/outsider_music/48687.html (firsthand accounts and discussion)
* http://mylist.net/archives/jandek/2004-October/000468.html (firsthand account; follow the link to the HTML attachment)
* http://mylist.net/archives/jandek/2004-October/000487.html (David Tibet confirming it was Jandek; he says “The whole show came about after 7 months of secret negotiations and was done on the basis that Jandek’s name was not used in ANY of the publicity at ANY time.”)

Photos taken at the show are floating around the net. It’s definitely the same guy as on the album covers. I’m no longer hosting any of the pictures here unless I can straighten out proper permissions and attribution. I’m looking into it.

This is taken from Seth Tisue's famous Jendek website.....

Okay, anybody who knows who Jandek is realizes what big news this is; Jandek is a musician from Houston, Texas who supposedly has never been positively identified, refuses to do interviews or play live, and is insanely prolific. This is akin to finding another set of genitals on your body after thirty-five years of life! Wow! I'm gonna do some more reading about this.

1. I remember reading about this guy in one of the music magazines.
Well, not him, exactly -- there was something some journalist did, interviewing people Jandek knew, but he was never able to get the guy to commit to an interview himself or something like that -- do I have the right mystery musician? He's from Austin or somewhere, has released numerous self-financed singles ... jeez, wish I remembered better. Is this the guy?

2. That's him!
He's been putting out incredibly spooky, disturbing, dissonant loner music since 1978 (sometimes more than two albums a year!), but had never played live or even given out his real name until now.

He's a complete mystery (or not: actually his name is Sterling Smith and he apparently has some job at some big corporation in Texas (Enron?), but he is notoriously reclusive and has never admitted that he's the same guy.....

check out Seth Tisue's site for more info and a primer on Jandek.....very intersting dude.

8. A lot, really.
Jandek repulses most listeners with his untuned guitar, his off-key howling and his refusal to approach convential modes of musical expression.

Baseball repulses me because it's fucking baseball.

7. Cool. The Arches is a great venue - disused railway tunnels under Glasgow.

9. I thought you'd be impressed.....
There was no publicity beforehand, and all the negotiations had to be done insecret. It's really an intriguing story.....even if you've never heard Jandek, it's still an amazing way to conduct your business.

Most of the questions being asked on those forums were along the lines of "Why Scotland?" Well....why not?

11. Glasgow is pretty up there on the international indie rock conspiracy.
Seems like a good fit cosmopolitan enough to have interested people, but distant enough from big centres to maintain some anonymity.

12. Exactly. Plus Jandek needed to play somewhere
where his anonymity wouldn't be challenged. There's too many interested parties in Texas, and he needs to keep his corporate job.

I heard the rest of the festival was great too: supposedly Keiji Haino put in a fantastic set earlier in the program. (Big whoop: JANDEK FUCKING PLAYED LIVE!)

10. Broslum new CD?
Edited on Thu Oct-21-04 12:22 PM by Rambis
I have heard they are the best new Traditional Scottish band out there but they had no CD. I have a friend heading to Ireland for x-mas and I want him to pick it up if one is available. Any help would be great!

Thanks on Lemmy!
Before Capercaillie came anywhere near the stage, the audience were treated to
the sound of Broslum, a young Fort Willam band, who show all the signs of
becoming one of the future exciting sounds of the traditional Music scene in
Scotland. They delighted the audience with three fine sets, including some
foot tapping puirt a beul, delightful clarsach sounds with red tasselled
fiddle playing and strong Gaelic vocals from all five members of the band, who
include two of the Henderson family from Fort William.

If you here anything let me know please.
