YOU. GOTTA. BE. FUCKIN. KIDDING ME.
Edited on Thu Oct-21-04 02:12 AM by WilliamPitt
I just came from the streets of Boston. Not where the riots are, but where tens of thousands of people are hugging each other spontaneously, high-fiving people in passing cars, and just reveling in history.

Tip of the hat to the Yankees, the greatest sports franchise in American history. Thank you for being so good, so excellent, because if you were not as good as you are, this whole thing would be a lot less meaningful. One defines oneself by the superior. Thank you for the definition.

The Curse is over. Whatever happens in the World Series is gravy.

Here we go, yo.

2. I was going to root for the NL team in the World Series
Just because I'm a NL kind of guy. And because I thought the Yankees would be the AL team to go. But the Sox have inspired me. They've made me a fan. This was one of the greatest LCS of all time and I'm glad I got to witness it.

3. Ditto.
I was assuming a Yankee-St. Louis World Series, and as a traditional NL fan, was going to be rooting for the Cards all the way. Somehow I just can't get it up for the Cards or the Astros after seeing what Boston did during the past four days. Red Sox all the way!

6. Hell of a game. Wish I were in Boston right now...
Not a Bostonian, but I find spontaneous displays of emotion and collective good will to be inspiring. Of course, watching the Sox hand the Yankees their ass was pretty inspiring.

8. That is truly amazing
Having been born 40 or so miles from NYC, I've always rooted for the Yankees, but I am so very glad that the "curse" has been lifted. My heart sings with and for all of you Bostonians, and I will be cheering for the Sox in the WS.

Congratulations!!

12. Agreed.
If ever I hear a Yankee fan say "1918" again, I will simply respond, "2004."

18. And the greatest part is, they unraveled as a team.
Edited on Thu Oct-21-04 03:07 AM by DemsUnite
There's no one scapegoat to peg it all on, a la Bill Buckner. They don't dare pile on Rivera.

Yeah, "2004" should sum it up nicely.

15. No, no ,no no Will.
1918 is the curse. Winning the series and only then will the monkey be off our backs. Beating the Yanks is half the battle.
The ghosts of 46, 67, 75 and 86 are still walking the streets of Bostons rattling their chains. Beatiing the curse is winning the whole thing, since the Babe's curse was that the Sox not win a World series again.
The whole fucking thing!

Hey, I'm rooting for the BoSox, as I always do, but The Curse is not about the Yankees.

Think 1986, Will. Mets.

The Curse is about denying the Red Sox the World Championship. I'm proud that they defeated the worthy Yankees, in The House That Ruth Built, no less, but they have yet to win the Series. Let's hold off the "Curse Broken!" talk for just one minute, or I'm going to bring up Bill Buckner.

GO BOSOX!!!!!

20. 'The Curse' was invented by Dan Shaunessy after 1986
He wrote a book about it. No one talked about a 'curse' before that.

The dragon has been slayed.

22. Could have sworn the talk started in '49
Of course, I wasn't alive in '49, but everything I've read says that's when talk of "The Curse" truly emerged.

I want to see the dragon slayed, too, Will. So far, I think he's only wounded.

Onto the Fall Classic! GO CARDINALS!!! I can't bear a single political analogy from the mouth of Tim "A Walk Is As Good As A Home Run" McCarver!!

:D

25. Last night, when he insisted that "A walk is as good as a home run,"
I affirmed my vision to be alive when Tim McCarver retires, so that I can throw roses at the bus that carries him away.

Enough, already. And enough with Al Michaels, as well. Can we get some younger baseball announcers? Someone who won't spit out completely ridiculous analogies when at a loss for words?

Hint to McCarver: Enjoy the silence. I know we do.

16. A little history...
Boston won its first five World Series appearances, the latter three with Babe Ruth, who was sold the Yankees in 1920. Since beating the Chicago Cubs for the 1918 title, Boston has lost four World Series – to the Cardinals in 1946 and 1967, the Cincinnati Reds in 1975 and the New York Mets in 1986.

Boston hasn't won the World Series since 1918. They haven't won a playoff series or a Pennant series against the Yankees since they sold Babe Ruth to the Yanks.

This win was truly historic.

A World Series win will just be the icing on the cake that Boston fans have been craving to eat for 86 years.

Hats off to the Red Sox! Your day has finally come!

This one's for Ted Williams, Jim Rice, Bill Buckner, et. al.
