Why are the Yankees hated?

Why are they the "Evil Empire"?

I love Bernie Williams. He is my fave of all time.

and they weren't hated then. They were admired.

Things have changed since Steinbrenner got involved.

12. we listened to the series on the radio in jr hi school (the 50s)
Every year the Yankess won. Lots of the kids in class (in OK) liked the Yankees because of M Mantel.........and because the Yankees didn't have any blacks on the team.....especially important when they played against the Dodgers and Jackie Robinson

23. Apparently there was more racism in OK than in NY back then
The "Brookly Bums" were also extremely popular, in large part thanks to Jackie Robinson and Roy Campanella. There was a natural rivalry between the Yanks and the Dodgers because they just happened to be the best all-around teams in baseball back then. My sister rooted for the Dodgers and I rooted for the Yanks - and it had nothing to do with racism. They were just better and more exciting teams then, and for a while it seems like they'd meet up in just about every World Series. And the fans for both teams were far better behaved than NYY fans these days.

Plus, there was the ever-popular New York Giants with Willie Mays giving the Dodgers a run for the Pennant every year.

And the Yanks continued to enjoy their popularity when Elston Howard joined the team.

And it wasn't just Mantle - before him there was Joe Dimaggio, Yogi Berra, Phil Rizzuto, Hank Bauer, etc., and the Yanks built on that after Mantle arrived and Dimaggio left. The Dodgers also had Duke Snyder, Carl Furillo, Gil Hodges, the beloved "PeeWee" Reese, etc.

Those were teams for the ages - before free agency, when ballplayers played out their careers for the same team, for the most part. Every year you could count on the Yanks still being the Yanks, and the Dodgers still being the Dodgers. THAT's why they were both so popular.

Not to mention George Steinbrenner was still wetting his bed instead of pissing on baseball.

27. Nonsense
Try talking to a Brooklyn Dodgers fan.

Steinbrenner, while hardly a saint, doesn't come close to winning the prize for most despicable person owning a baseball team. Under your premise, the Cincinatti Reds under Marge Schott should have been the most hated team of all time. Or how about the Rangers when they were owned by W? Angelos in Baltimore might be even more hateful than Steinbrenner as well. The Yankees are hated because they win.

Also, could you explain yourself? I don't believe I made any analogies.

41. I seem to have overestimated you
Let me spell it out as simply for you as I can since you seem to need it. You said Steinbrenner was the #1 reason to dislike the Yankees. I pointed out that there have been far worse people running baseball teams, such as Marge Schott, and, using your logic, her team should have been much more hated than the Yankees. You have subsequently ignored this point and compared me to the president, which, I believe, is against the DU rules. My point about Schott was, and remains, extremely clear. Got it?

13. I'm not a sports fan
but I never understood that complaint. Isn't it the goal of ALL franchises to get the best team? If the Yankees consistently do so, is it necessarily their "fault"?

That being said, I'm glad the Sox won. But I don't get why the Yankees are somehow wrong for fielding the best team they can get.

15. I'm not a sports fan, either.
But as I understand it, the complaint is less that the Yankees are just trying to field the best team possible, as that what's "possible" for their bank account is so much higher than most teams it saps the fun out of seeing them win -- and New Yorkers usually don't care. The reaction is (to exaggerate) something like watching the bully kid who's been held back three grades bragging about his competitive prowess during P.E. (complete with a gang of cronies to cheer him on).

At least, that's the impression I get from listening to my friends who are sports fans.

31. Thanks for being rational, dookus
A lot of people hate the yankees based on a set of talking points, that frankly, is not too dissimilar to the right-wing talk radio talking points. The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of baseball owners see their teams strictly as business propositions and don't care too much about winning provided that their coffers are being filled. Steinbrenner, who has a lot less money, than, say the Tribune company which owns the Cubs, or Nintendo, which owns the Mariners, is fixated on winning, and he reinvests whatever is necessary to try to have the best team. I truly believe that the payroll disparity between the top spending teams (Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Dodgers, etc) is primarily one of choice, rather than economics.

30. This is such a losing argument
Until the last two seasons, the Yankees did not have the highest payroll. That honor was bounced around by the Dodgers, Braves, Orioles, and yes, the sainted Boston Red Sox. This year's acquisition of A-Rod was the first time in two decades that the Yankees have had the league's highest paid player, and that's a bit of a technicality, since the Texas Rangers are actually paying for about half of his contract (a whopping $65 million dollars, if I recall)

We have a sports writer here that talks about who the Yankees should buy during the year, and with the attitude that the rest of the majors is the farm system for the Yanks.

Try living in NY. Geez, you cant escape them OR the Rangers. Both teams pay ENORMOUS amounts of money to get everyone who possibly has a name, have the most arrogant, obnoxious, violent, drunken excuses for fans and when they lose, it's like a black cloud falls over NY. It's all over local news non stop today, and all the hand wringing and bemoaning is simply JOYFUL and WONDERFUL to watch! The 'newscasters' are downright depressed, and it's MARVELOUS to watch!!!!!! THIS NY-er is simply LOVING THIS!!!!

43. It's personal for me.
I grew up in Kansas City. There I was, a small boy in a mid western town and was absoultly thrilled the first time my team made it to the 1976 ACLS where they got beat by......the Yankees.

Then the next year,1977 ACLS, beaten by....the Yankees.

And the next year, 1978 ACLS, beaten by....the Yankees.

And not by blow outs....oh no. Dramatic, nail biters.
Year after year, my small-kid heart ripped out by a new Yankee hero, carrying his team to the World Series.

In 1980, they finally made it to the Series, and quite predictibly lost, but it didn't matter to me. Becasuse the Royals beat the real foe.

They beat the Yankees!

44. Because baseball fans are stupidly ignorant.
Unless you're a Boston fan and you dislike New York from a pure competitive standpoint, disliking the Yankees is dumb. The most common reason people give for not liking New York is because they're at the vanguard of the big-money system currently ruining the sport. New York simply takes advantage of the lunacy of free agency and overinflated contracts and they do it better than everyone else. Every team tries to do it, to some extent, but for some reason we're supposed to dislike NY because they can do it better than others because of their reveune flow.

You want someone to blame for baseball's problems, folks? Look in the mirror. Everyone who rooted for Boston against NY because it was the baseball David rooting for Goliath needs to have their heads surgically removed from their keisters. Boston bought up some of the best players in baseball over the last few years, attempting to be NY-lite. Even if Boston wins the series this year, all that does is encourage more teams to be like Boston rather than, say, be like Oakland and try to get by on homegrown talent and signing a deep roster rather than going after high-priced talent.

New York is no better or worse than your own teams, folks. I'm a White Sox fan and I hate how the Yankees keep kicking my team around like a football, but I don't -hate- the team specifically. They're no better or worse than anyone else.

46. The Yankees play a very important role in baseball: they are Goliath...
They were the biggest and baddest in my dad's time, they were the biggest and baddest when I was a kid, and they are still consistently the biggest and baddest team today. they always (and I mean always) seem to have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to deep pockets, Hall-of-Fame quality players, and World Championships.

Usually, if a team wants to get to the World Series, it will have to go through the NY Yankees first.

If you beat the Yankees, you have done well. Very well.
