Wal-Mart Refuses To Carry Jon Stewart's Book
<snip>

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- No nudes is good nudes for Wal-Mart.

It seems photos of naked and aged bodies are a little too racy for Wal-Mart. The old naked people are supposed to be Supreme Court justices, in the take-off of a school textbook.

Wal-Mart executives say photographs of nine nude bodies aren't appropriate for its shelves.

The company decided this week not to offer shoppers copies of the best-selling book "America (The Book)," written by Jon Stewart and "The Daily Show" writers.

The retail giant canceled its order for the books when executives got wind of the photo in the book. The picture features the nude, aging bodies, each capped with the superimposed head of a Supreme Court justice.

The book -- a mock school textbook -- parodies the American government in typical "Daily Show" fashion. The page facing the nude photos has cutouts of the justices' robes, complete with a caption asking readers to "restore their dignity by matching each justice with his or her respective robe."

1. The real reason was probable due to the fact that they could not
buy the book cheaper in China. Wal-Mart, American made.....in China!

3. They lose a bunch o' money on this, GUARANTEED.
They are their own distributors; buying directly from publishers instead of going through Ingram or Baker and Taylor.

Bestsellers almost NEVER can be returned to publishers, that's why 4 months after the latest Grisham comes out, you see it for 5.98 at your local bookstore. They will take a substantial loss on this.

Happy dance from this library book acquisitions person! ROFLMAO

BTW, bestsellers are calculated from WHOLESALE, not retail figures. That means Sprawl-Mart has pushed them up in the bestseller lists (it's still no. 1 on NYT) WITHOUT selling anywhere near their inventory.

I LOVE this.

4. Who buys books at Wal Mart anyway?
The average Wal Martian doesn't strike me as much of a reader.

7. Yeah
They suck--they are the only outlet that doesn't sell my book too.
They are the reason the economy is like it is but in the case of the Jon Stewart book they are so Stuuuuuuuuuuupid. Cause like my publisher says --they don't make money on it so screw them.
I go to Barnes and Noble anyway. Screw them. They are also a major reason why Bush keeps pushing to take overtime away.

8. More money for other booksellers, less money for Wal-Mart
Sounds pretty win/win to me.
