32. They won the American League pennant.

The American League and the National League play one another in the World Series. So this was the playoffs BEFORE the series. The National League pennant playoff game 7 (the last game) is tonight. The Houston Astros play the St Louis Cardinals, and whoever wins the game tonight will play against the Boston Red Sox in the World Series.

The reason that people were so excited about this last series is history: the Red Sox and the Yankees have a long and bitter rivalry, dating all the way back to 1918. I don't know all the particulars of it, but apparently the Red Sox were cursed by Babe Ruth, a player for the Yankees. Supposedly that's why the Red Sox have not won a World Series since 1918.

Then the rivalry is compounded by the fact that the Red Sox and the Yankees played each other LAST year in the American League pennant, and the series stretched out AGAIN to game 7, but the Yankees won. It was a heartbreaking loss for Red Sox fans, and Yankees fans rubbed it in pretty hard. So this year was kind of payback. :)

The way that I get interested in sports is by knowing a little of the "backstory". I don't like all the stats and numbers and whose batting average is what. I like the human elements! Plus the other way that I get interested is by picking a team and making an emotional investment in rooting for them. And that emotional connection can be surprisingly strong! I don't know, I find it fascinating. I know not everybody does. :) Again, I'm sorry you're having a bad day with this. I thought maybe a little background would help.
