9. Only the new ones suck... |
|
The reason being is that hes pulling things direct from his ass as he writes them, and he lets his kids name the characters, resulting in people like "Jar Jar Binks" and "Count Dooku."
The old ones are still awesome.

I was never a fan of the old ones either, but the new ones make me hurl |

I just never found the story all that intriguing. Then again, Sci Fi has never tickled me quite the way fantasy has.

11. FreeBSD for server apps, Linux to have fun with. |
|
FreeBSD is awesome for building a box to do something and just letting it run.
For playing around and using as a desktop also, I like Linux.
I used to use Fedora Core 2, but I'm really liking this new distro called "Ubuntu."

*BSDs for firewalls and/or security (or for running forever), Linux for desktops and/or web servers if you feel like it.
Couldn't agree with you more, and I'm a webmaster in a pure MS shop! :)

21. Why does a Sci Fi movie still have " sound " in space? |
|
and riddle me this.
When in Star Wars, Han Solo says the ' Falcon made the something run in under 2 . something parsecs ... did he mean that?
I always thought a parsec was a parallax second of an arc ( 3.26 light years ) and not a measure of velocity. Am I wrong?

28. Two answers to two questions. |
|
There is sound in space because otherwise, fight sequences would be boring. Just pretend that every ship, missile, star, asteroid and laser has its own mic.
There are two answers on The Kessel Run. The first is that Han was just talking shit, saying something he knew was bogus to see if Kenobi knew anything about space travel or was just a rube. The second is that The Kessel Run is measured in the distance you have to travel to complete it. A large cluster of black holes is along the way, and it causes ships to have to fly around them, for obvious reasons. The faster your ship is, the more you can "cut the corner". So a shorter travel distance is indicative of a faster vessel.

33. I am cool with the Kessel Run being a matter of speed to |
|
manoeuver around black holes... but its kind of obscure.
its a factoid that flight officers know about.
But as for sound.... 2001 was the only movie that really treated it correctly.
excellent.

But it gets explored a lot in the EU (extended universe of comics, books, games and so on).
And yes, 2001 did treat it properly. It also fit with the themes and stlyes that Kubric used so well. The desolate, quiet isolation of the entire ship was made all the creepier by the vacuumous silence outside its hull.
