Tolkien Fans: Can you help me with an analogy I'm trying to make |
|
Ok, I need some help here.
I am not at home, and I don't have my Tolkien books here. Do you remember when Gandalf meets Sauroman, and it talks about how on closer inspection Sauroman's garmets were no longer white, but in fact threads of many colors/all colors?
I'm really wanting someone to quote me that actual passage - I'd like to use it in something I'm writing. I'm writing about how George Bush splits the world into two camps: the guys with the white hats/guys who wear white and the guys with black hats/guys who were black. I'd like to make the analogy and then point out how the "white hats" are really not white at all....

Gandalf: Yo, playa, what up? What's with the new threads? Those are psychedelic. Your old white robes were better. Saruman: We're gonna get it on with Sauron. He's da bomb. Gandalf: You're trippin', beyotch.
Something like that.

I looked then and saw that his robes, which had seemed white, were not so, but were woven of all colours, and if he moved they shimmered and changed hue so that the eye was bewildered.
"I liked white better," I said.
"White!" he sneered. "It serves as a beginning. White cloth may be dyed. The white page can be overwritten; and the white light can be broken."
"In which case it is no longer white," said I. "And he that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom."

"I did not give you leave to go," said Gandalf sternly. "I have not finished. You have become a fool, Saruman, and yet pitiable. You might still have turned away from folly and evil, and have been of service. But you choose to stay nd gnaw the ends of your old plots. Stay then! But I warn you, you will not easily come out again. Not unless the dark hands of the East stretch out to take you. Saruman!' he cried, and his voice grew in power and authority. 'Behold, I am not Gandalf the Grey, whom you betrayed. I am Gandalf the WHite, who has returned from death. You have no colour now, and I cast you from the order and from the Council.'
