17. Nope. Just got here.
I'm not going to try to fold the death of a 21 year old woman into a pissing contest between baseball advocates. Anyone who does so should be totally fucking ashamed of themselves. Period.

36. What? Do cops just wait for a chance to use those guns?
IF these bean bags can kill - don't use them.

28. Actually, in recent times, they haven't
I'm not quite sure why not, but NY seems largely immune to this phenomenon.

30. Because only stupid people or suicidal people
riot in the Apple and bring down the wrath of New York's finest.

As Moff Tarkin said, "Fear keeps the local systems in line. Fear of this battle station."

Nobody, but nobody, fucks with New York cops.

Edited on Thu Oct-21-04 04:21 PM by YankeesFan
Maybe it's because our cops have more important things to do than break up riots and our citizenry know this.

When the Yankees won the ALCS last year, I don't recall any rioting. And if there was, it was minor.

26. Red Sox fans? Or rowdy college kids from the world over?
It happens everywhere and you know it, and it is a damn shame. When did sports victory eual setting things on fire? I'm so sorry for this young girl.

Just wait till these young whippersnappers are drafted if Bush gets in again.

5. This is really sad
I just don't understand why people freak out when a sports team wins. It's cool to be happy and all, but these riots are just plain ridiculous.

14. That sucks
I just don't understand why people feel the need to have violent confrontations with police following sports games. That article says on one college campus, the kids were throwing beer cans and flaming toilet paper at the police? What the fuck? Why?

40. Which doofuses?
I'm not being cute, I'm just wondering if you think the police carry any blame in this situation. I was down there last night, on Boylston, just wandering around... the extent of my mayhem was a few high-fives to strangers.

A couple of observations: One, the crowd certainly needed to be dispersed. You can't let a mob like that just hang around for hours, so when the line of riot geared police and horses came marching toward us, we certainly did bug out of there.

But also there was a lot of talk today in town as to whether some of the police tactics were necessary. I wasn't on Lansdowne when folks tried to climb the Monster, but you wonder whether these so-called "less than lethal" weapons were really necessary. The mobs I was celebrating with didn't confront the police in the slightest. I suspect a bit of an itchy trigger finger... but again, I didn't see it.

39. it's stories like this that make me contented to live in Seattle
because we're almost guaranteed not to win a major league thing. Yeah I know the women's basketball happened, but the numbers for that just weren't there. If this town were to win an NFL or NBA championship, or the Series-I'd be very afraid for what would happen afterward.

This is very sad.
