I do have a little bit of a beef though. It's about the gold stars and newcomers posting. My "way more significant other" has a gold star and I don't even though I control the purse strings in the house and okayed the donation to DU. I have posted a couple of times and not explained that I am married to Old and In the Way (not wanting to intrude on his 8000 + postings) and rather got a cold shoulder. (I know...boo-hoo.) I wish there was an icon that could be posted next to my posts that indicates "Hey, everyone she is okay, she is not a freeper" I know that is probably very unrealistic, but I thought I should share me feelings. Still love you guys though!

65. Next time you two make a donation

have it made under your name so you can get a star, too, or perhaps you have an extra $10 bucks laying around. It doesn't seem fair and goes against every progressive fiber, but the stars do seem to matter given the Freeper infiltration rate around here.

Also, there are SOOO many posters here, it certainly is hard to stand out. I wouldn't take any perceived cold shoulder personally. I've been here for what seems like forever and I still kill more threads than I care to admit. :-)

I was never enough of a dead head to pick up the Garcia reference - but I did quickly pick up on the not so old (don't think that much older than myself - give or take a decade) and certainly way too thoughtful to be 'in the way'. Of course, as a nonspouse/family member (and only a coinhabitant of a cyber community), it might not seem the same as being there ;-) .

I LOVE the meaning of your nic. Absolutely frickin' on target. We are on one with that.

I have had the opportunity to work, converse, hangout, study and just be in a whole lot of parts of this country and with many levels (social class/ethnic/ etc) of our society. It is my nature to force superficial conversations into something more (the teacher and the prof/brat in me, I guess). From the guys running a garage in Indiana back in the eighties with whom I discussed the "flag amendment" (first bush election issue), to an older junior leaguer in Chicago talking about urban teens/education and the challenges of the young black male in Detroit (at that point in time one of the highest mortality rates and incarceration rates in the country), to self declared "simple country folks" in rural Alabama with high school educations with whom the conversation centered around race relations (really!) and problems with funding and equity in public schools. I have learned that most people - regardless of education - are able of deep conversations about issues. Most people are not so ideological that they can not grasp the complexity of issues - and weigh in with common sense and insights from personal experiences. I really believe in the capacity of people to think - when challenged (and not in a hostile combative way), and when thinking to give insights that expand one's own understanding of things.

I say this to say there is vast untapped potential in this country. And it is interested dialogue that can reach and begin to tap into that potential. I believe very much that the soul and intellect if open and not arrogant can reach across divides that we perceive to be unbridgeable, and can connect. I believe that some solutions to big problems still allude us becuase those bridges remain unconstructed - and valuable insights/information elude us as a result. And that through building bridges, having conversations, pulling policy makers into those conversations and creating broader and broader conversations - that your sentiment - that Peace Can Be Won - Without war - is very much possible - and is actually within our reach/reality.

Thank you for the sentiment and words, sorry that it sent me on a flow of conscience response, but the essence of your words do so resonate with me.

Hey, Thanks for the note...It does truly blow my mind that we all can't get along without aggression. There is no issue in the world we or anyone else can win right now with war. That is the main reason I truly hate Bush so much . I am so embarrassed that I live in a country that would start a war against a Third World county, killing women and children without any dialogue. p.s. should I go with kerry or dean?

Old and in the Way was the group Garcia formed to do some bluegrass music! It completely rocks, if you'll pardon the mixed metaphor. Vassar Clements played fiddle, and several Dead types (whose name I don't remember) played banjo, guitar, and bass, I think.

I saw Vassar Clements earlier this summer. He's done some more recordings with the O&ITW folks -- sans Garcia -- and has titled the new group, Old and in the Gray!

I've been lurking forever and I finally decided to register so I can participate in the discussions. I'm so tired of talking to sheeple who haven't got a clue.

I've been reluctant to get involved in any political forums because of ... well ... fear. :-( But when I realized how courageous so many of you are - BevHarris immediately comes to mind - I decided that I don't want to be afraid anymore because it doesn't change anything, it only allows the situation to get worse.

From what I've seen, you guys are terrific and this is the best forum to be a part of because the DU members have compassion, integrity and respect for different opinions. I've learned so much from all of you and I'm very grateful for that knowledge.
Here's a toast to all the DU members! :toast: I hope that someday my "two cents" will contribute to someone else's decision to join.

eliminate the http:// and add click here[br />

Using the example above I will erase the http:// and replace it with the left square bracket and :
After html I will add the pipe |(it is above the enter key) and then type click here and the right bracket which will close the brackets.

I used to post on a board that is populated with 95% hard-right repubs and I attempted to enlighten them, however, their love affair with b... and company prevents them from even considering another point to view. Then I stumbled upon DU. Now I find myself stopping in here to get some "fair and balanced" news.

Below is a recent post on the board I used to visit. It's frightening to think Americans think like this......
