Call me old fashion but I do the same thing I did to get to and from school as a freshman, I walk.

3. I'm an old cow now
and where I am you can't drive till your 18 (a brilliantly timed age as you can drive the same day you can legally drink???) but I didn't get around to getting mine for years after I was able to - that way other people had to be designated driver - worked out quite well

9. I was almost 18
I had no burning desire to drive and put it off as long as possible.

And this was before the infamous OPEC oil boycott!

11. The day I turned 15 1/2
(this WAS 1982) I was at the DMV.

I loved the liberating endeavor of driving.

Never depending on anyone or anything. Plus keep in mind, I grew up in L.A. Not many choices back in 1982.

13. My daughter is 17 and we live across a small field from the school
and my daughter thinks it's torture to walk! Too spoiled. But then she wears higher heeled shoes at times so I don't blame her then.

I didn't even own or have access to a car until I was 20 and I walked about a block to school and also home from work if I couldn't get a ride. I do remember walking and actually kind of liking it at times. You miss a lot of stuff when you drive. I liked the time to reflect and philsophize, too! Sounds funny because I'm female and most girls would never WALK especiallu by themselves! But then again that was in the early 80s in a small city.

15. I got my license the first day I could at 16 but
nobody would let me drive!?! :eyes:

Couldn't ever figure out why. I thought it was so stupid my mom wouldn't let me drive her car at least sometimes. But she was a single mom and if I ever did anything to it we wouldn't have anything to drive so now I understand but back then I would wait until late at night (after she'd had a few drinks) and steal the car!!! I was really a rebel back then.

16. I didn't start driving until I was 22
As a fellow young suburbanite (I'm 23), I also felt no need to drive as soon as I got the chance. It's not that abnormal, but then again normalcy is overrated.

17. I didn't get mine for more than
a year after I was eligible. I bicycled more than 200 miles a week during that time. That was sufficient freedom when I was unattached. Finally the acquisition of a girlfriend who lived 20 miles away, let to my finally getting it. While I had no problem going the distance (a couple of times I pedaled over, it was faster than public transit) the return trip after dark was an issue.

Someone posted the opening line from a pornographic story on a cycling advocacy group: "The state just issued me a license to have sex. They call it a drivers license".

I finally got one so that I could drive a truck for my father's business. I always seemed to take far less time on a run, and the truck was a lot more reliable with me at the wheel.

Big kudos for being so involved at 18. Either your folks raised you right or you rebelled right. Either way, happy first voting year.

20. I'm 20, no license
no need-- college is a pitifully short walk from home, although high school was across town in the ghetto.

also, if I had my license, I'd have no car. I'd have to pay for it myself, and if I had a car, I'd have to pay for the insurance myself.

I've thought about getting my license anyway-- mostly just so friends will let me drive their cars-- but it's a hassle. Before it was having no time-- now it's that I don't want to give the DMV 25 bucks.

21. My son, 19, doesn't have a license.
He says he'll drive when he's ready. Meanwhile, he loves dorm life, rides with driving friends and happily pays for gas. Me, I couldn't wait to get my license at just under 16. To each his own.

23. I'm 27 and don't drive.
Never have and I don't plan on starting. I live in a bike friendly place (Eugene, OR) so I can get to my destination almost as fast as the drivers (awesome bike paths). And I love to rock out with my iPod during my commute. And we have a really great bus system. It is ideal for homework time.

24. John, you don't want to drive in the DC Metro area
Trust me. It's extremely stressful and nerve wracking even as a veteran driver. I can't imagine trying to learn to drive among the chaos.

27. You are not alone
I grew up in the suburbs, I took driver training, but I didn't get my license till I was 29 and was put in a situation where I absolutely had to drive.

I didn't drive at all while I lived in Portland, 1993-2003, and even now, I drive as little as possible.

28. I got my license when I was 24
I was even rural. I had moved in with my dad shortly after turning 16. He and my stepmother were poor (I got reduced lunches). If I would have got a license, I would have had to have gotten a job. If I had gotten a job, that would have taken time away from my extracurricular activites and my studies. I had to do well at school so I could get scholarships to a good college.

And I don't regret it. I'm probably a better driver because I practiced all those years.

I didn't get my permit until I was 16 anyway.
