HOOTERS TO OPEN IN CHINA!! HOOTERS TO OPEN IN CHINA!!!
:eyes:

<snip>

SHANGHAI, China -- It could be an eye-opening experience as the Hooters restaurant chain opens its first outlet amid the conservative, almost prudish society of China.

Hooters has a racy reputation for its combination of cold beer, chicken wings and scantily-clad waitresses. The company calls its image "delightfully tacky, yet unrefined." The first restaurant in China opens Friday in Shanghai, marking another milestone in the city's rise as the country's commercial hub.

Hooters' presence underscores how China's economic vitality is challenging conservative, male-dominated views about sexuality and prudish communist morality.

Hooters' investors are betting that changing attitudes will take the "Hooters Girls" in stride. The restaurant is located in a foreigner-friendly area of Shanghai.

1. Fucking horrible.
Why is it always the WORST goddamned aspects of American culture that get exported? No wonder most of the rest of the world think of Americans as crass, boorish imbeciles.

4. Largely not that incorrect, really.
But then, when one considers the hideous commercialisation of culture, the reduction of everything to its lowest common denominator, the strong current of anti-intellectualism, and the rest of it, it tends to be somewhat surprising that there's even a minority who are otherwise.

17. I disagree
the majority of folks are great people in their own way. Many may not be sophisticated, but they are good people who don't need to be put down.

10. well, Western 'culture' has changed China a lot
From McDonald's, KFC, Pizza Hut, Starbucks & Haagen Dazs to Hollywood movies, our 'decadent' Western culture has changed China a lot in the past decade. Their society is much more open now and Chinese generally love Western culture & style.

5. Benny Hill
For years most popular English export TV show. It would horrify many upper-class folks that everyone would think every Englishman was like Benny Hill.

So, do I think that people would think the entire US is like Hooters? Yes and no, but they will think differently when they learn more about our culture.

18. I hope you didn't use babelfish?
I've used that to semi-translate things in Chinese in the past. It is about 50-50 on its translation, on a good day. My wife (who speaks, reads & writes Chinese) usually laughs at the translations, though.

13. The Chinese are not that prudish
I have a friend who has travelled on business in China. He visited several cities to meet with manufacturers, and at each stop along the way the trip coordinators had set up prostitutes for the delegation.

This would seem to point out the all too typical hypocrisy of those in power that rail about morality in other people's lives. You know, like Neil Bush, Bill O'Reilly, Jimmy Swaggart, and now Wang Hung.

15. Every high end hotel I went to in China...
Every high-end hotel I went to in China has "massage" services that are available. After a grueling day climbing the Great Wall, my wife and I wanted regular massages at our hotel, and she overheard a man negotiating with the madame, I mean, massage parlor owner what sort of services they offered.

I've also heard it is very common for single male travelers in hotels to get phone calls from prostitutes at night in their hotel rooms. These prostitutes must be getting the names & numbers from the front desk.

16. My friend said that after dinner they went to a bar and were joined
by a group of women. He was told he could choose from the lot. It was well organized, and out in the open.

He didn't comment on whether there were Buddist fundamentalist (is there such a thing?) pacing outside with Repent signs.

19. Do I have to be the first person to ask?
Are there enough "endowed" Chinese women to find for their workforce?

I don't think it's a false stereotype that Asian women tend to be less curvy in the sense of the hooters tradtion

20. plenty, but ...
There are 1.3 billion Chinese in China - they have plenty of choices when it comes to body types. Though, I would say that - on the average - they are definitely much slimmer overall than your average American. My wife is 5'4" and is a size 0 and has trouble finding clothes in America.

However, as a guy that notices all aspects of a woman's appearance, "busty" woman are also much rarer in China than here. But, slim, leggy women with B cups are much more common.

21. That's what I was talking about when I said "curvy" I was talking about
the "hooters tradition" of bustiness. Stacked Chinese women are ultra-rare as far as I know. I was apprehensive about coming out and calling them flatter because people at DU take about 2 seconds before calling you an ultra-sexist snake the moment you talk about anything that isn't ultra flattering about anyone.
