The one pub in England that I won't go in.......
Edited on Fri Oct-22-04 10:07 AM by Pert_UK
Seriously, I drive past this pub every day on my way to and from work. It used to really confuse me and make me angry until, after several weeks, I finally figured it out...

Don't know why the linked pic isn't working - try clicking here...

http://www34.brinkster.com/baldock/george/George.html

2nd picture down is more obvious.

It's the George IV, NOT the George W.......Bloody stupid cursive writing!

P.

P.S.
Sorry it's not more amusing....it would have been better if it had just come up......Nadgers.

P.P.S.
Reminds me of that (apocryphal?) story about how "The Madness of King George" was only called that insetad of "The Madness of George III" because the film company were worried that most Americans would think they'd missed "The Madness of King George I" and "II"......Heh heh heh....No offence.

13. Do you watch PM's questions on C-Span?
I love watching their Parliament. It is so much more exciting than Congress. I really want to see Australia's parliament---that must make the British one seem peaceful

20. mmmmmm Batham's. I've had it, and it's excellent!
very good stuff indeed. If you're ever in East Anglia, be sure to try an Adnam's. Any of them are excellent.

Back in the early 90s, I worked at one of a handful of London pubs that had draught Adnams. A group of us went on a tour of the brewery, and stayed in their hotel in the town. GREAT beer.

The one thing I truly miss about living in the UK is the beer. You can get some halfway-decent cask-conditioned beers in the US, but you can't beat the real thing, pulled straight to the bar from the cellar (can you tell I used to be a CAMRA member?).

22. Adnam's is available in lots of places in London / SE....
I can get it near me in Herts. Not bad, although I prefer a "golden ale" - isn't it a bit dark?

Having said that, a good Winter brew!

24. Wow, times have definately changed!
It's a wonder what 12 years does! Yes, most of their brews are a little darker than golden, but they tend to be very hoppy and have sort of a seaside/"seaweedy" bite to them. It must be the air in Southwold.

My favorite was Adnam's Extra, which was somewhere between a Special and a regular bitter, but was very hoppy and a good session drink.

There was a pub across the green from where I worked that was a Young's house. Since we were in Fulham, about a mile north of the Wandsworth Bridge, they used to get their beer deliveries by dray horse. That was always neat to watch. Too bad their cellar sucked so bad. But despite even that, you still couldn't ruin a fresh pint of Young's!

12. Not apocryphal :( I'm Not offended by that reportage of it
(A friend of mine manages a theater chain-that story is too true)
I am offended that the US gov't runs such a sloppy educational system, that that would be seen as a widespread problem...Nation of Morans!

14. On the PPS
I think the film company was overly concerned---We know who george was and we know that your monarchs have Roman numerals next to their names---Henry VIII, or Richard III.
All americans learn about George III in their Elementary Schools. Not much detail, nor discussions of his 'madness', but the name is always the same.

Edited on Fri Oct-22-04 11:47 AM by foamdad
in some little village east of Chichester, W. Sussex. They were appalled when a buddy of mine tried to order a Newcastle Brown. The server looked at him with disgust and said: "Sir, we only serve proper beer here!" We all lost it.
