What's The First Car You Ever Owned?
A question that's asked on DU from time to time.

My first car was a 1958 Hillman Minx, like the one shown below. I paid $80 for it in 1970. The photo shows the original paint colors on my car - a previous owner painted the body bright red with a brush, and kept the roof white.

Mine was a 1974 Chevrolet Vega.
Blue, until it started immediately rusting after I got it. Then it was two toned.

A hideous car. I remember the aluminum engine...the damned thing was good only for city driving. God help you if you took it on the highway.

Also my first car. I put a front end quarter panel on that thing all by myself. Used to pull into the gas station and say "fill it up with oil and check the gas, please!" I still have a soft spot for that car.

20. 1976 Camaro
It was a metallic red with white pinstripes down the sides and the little wing on the trunk lid. Black and red interior. HUGE Chevy V-8 engine. Topped out at about 140 MPH. Used up so much gas (leaded, of course), that you could actually watch the gas gauge move toward empty. That car was so damn cool. God, I loved it.

One of the most reliable drive trains Chrysler ever developed. My '70 Barracuda had a Slant Six & a Tourque-Flite, and it was still going strong when I had to junk it in 1983 - the body was rotting out after 13 NJ winters (complete with rock salt on the roads).

Falcon & Corvair...both in the 60's...but can't remember what year. The falcon used more oil than gas! The Corvair's engine fell out the back once.

In 1970 My father was tired of all the mechanic bills and bought me a new 1970 Toy Corolla. It was the first year they came in with an automatic, in 3 colors....white,bottle green and urine yellow! I wanted the green but could not find one in greater LA in automatic....so I settle for white.

No heat, no defrost, a shimmy in the steering wheel at crusing speed (around 50mph - learned years later that the wheels need to be balanced to 0 exactly to keep this from happening), with the 'Idiots Book' I could work on it myself, in the winter with chains and studded tires I could drive anywhere....I want my bug back!!!

35. A beige 1966 Mercedes-Benz 250S Sedan...
Bought it used in 1975 from a doctor (a shrink, I later found out), for $4,000 even - the cost of a new Chevy back then.

Although it was a Benz, it was far from a luxury car -- crank windows, wing-wings(!), no A/C, "Mercedes leather" (aka vinyl) seats, a six-cylinder engine that could hardly pull the car, and a pretty noisy driver's compartment.

I drove this car for nearly 13 years. It was safe, ran very reliably, and, back then, there were still some independent mechanics who could maintain the thing for a reasonable price.

In my mind, I can stil "feel" the steering wheel of this old Benz, and also "feel" the ridges on the ignition key, if I think about it.

Great first car!

46. It most ass-uredly did!
Hell, the front clip/engine compartment was about half the length of the car. Mine had the 302 also, and that was a lotta motor for that car (especially for a 16 year old kid). I remember that when the thing broke down (which it did on a regular basis), it was a pain to work on, because that 302 motor was really jammed into the engine compartment.

My car was a 75 Mustang II, 302 auto, baby blue hard top with dark blue interior (vinyl, of course), no AC (in Texas)...and an 8 Track!!!

49. About That V8...
We took the Mustang to R&S Auto for a tune-up once - it never seemed to work right after that. So a few months later, we took it to Sears. The service manager asked me if I knew there were two different types of spark plugs in my car. It seems that the mechanic at R&S had too much trouble getting to the back two plugs on the passenger side of the engine, and didn't bother changing them.

It ran much better once all eight spark plugs matched...

65. 76 Buick Skyhawk

Great little car. 25-30 MPG with a V6 so it could get out of its own way, easier to work on than later cars and clean emissions. Mine was red, too, just like the picture above. (They were only available in red, white and blue that year. I've never seen a blue one, as it happens.)

Bought it in 89 for under $15.00 (yes, the decimal is in the right place) and restored it as a bonding project with my father. Failed miserably, but the car came through. (When we bought it, it had no engine. Or Transmission. And the Steering wheel and the alternator were in the hatch.)

Drove it from 1992 until 2000, when I couldn't get parts for it anymore and had to junk it.

There are times when I miss my Buick.

70. Mine was that sky-blue color
but later on I bought a yellow 1971 Super Beetle. It was all I could afford and I thought yellow was too much for me. So I never waxed it, left in the sun and faded it to a really cool sand color.

I actually had a 1960 Ford F-100 first, but you asked about cars...

Looked like this, with a 327 instead of the 396
