I'm going to New Orleans this New Years. What restaurant should I go to??
I'm going to the annual AIAS (Association of International Architecture students) Forum in New Orleans from Dec. 27 to Jan. 4. While in Nawlins, I want to go to the restaurant with the BEST shrimp and jambalaya. I need to know where I should go, because then I can take some of the group with me. But here's the deal: We're all a bunch of mild-palletted bland-eating North Dakotans going on this trip, and we won't be able to handle anything TOO spicy. As for me, I like a little spice more than the average ND farm kid, but not as much as someone who's lived in the South their whole life. I hate bland food myself. I'm going for more like a place that has really tasty food rather than just spicy.

Any Nawlins DUers care to give any suggestions???

1. there are so many
tujacks
cafe du monde
galatoire's
antoine's

It is a city of great food. Even the little diviest places have oyster po'boys, crawfish and that sweet dixie beer.

Good gravy, I am drooling just thinking about it.

3. maybe Pat O'Brien's
It's kinda touristy but it has a beautiful patio, although i'm not sure if December and january are the best months to sit outside, but you never know!
I went there several times when I lived in Biloxi, the food was good and the Hurricanes are knockouts!

I went to several other restaurants in the French Quarter unfortunately I cannot remember the names...
A link I found you might find useful...

4. Irene's on St Philip's, one block off Decatur has exquisite food
Mr B's Bistro on Royale has an eggplant pirogue to die for and barbeque shrimp that'll make you slap your mama. Petunia's on St Louis has wonderful crepes stuffed with all kinds of seafood (great bloody mary's too). Check out the Hermann-Grima House across the street-Its a fabulous tour.

Also Maspero's on Decatur. An $11 order of fried oysters brings you more food than you can possibly eat. Eat, drink, enjoy

7. We've been eating at the same good places. Yes, I wish I were
in New Orleans right now. Oh yes, there's a small seafood place over in Fat City called Drago's. Outstanding seafood.

5. Cafe Du Monde in the French Quarter
Edited on Fri Oct-22-04 05:07 PM by CottonBear
MMMMM! I was just there a few months ago. Chicory cafe au Lait and Beignets (french doughnuts with heaps of powdered sugar). You can also get juice and hot chocolate. You'll be addicted after one visit!

My husband is a New Orleans native. He doesn't like spicy food. Actually, not all creole/cajun food is spicy. Most dishes are tasty and flavorful but not hot. Try soft shell crab (if it's in season). Try oyster Po Boys. There is an excellent Oyster Bar on a corner, down the street from Cafe Du Monde on the opposite side of the street from the Cafe. The name escapes me at the moment. They have an incredible oyster which is grilled in its shell with butter and white wine over an open flame. Yummmm!

If you're going to be in Lacombe (north, across the lake), try Billy Farrell's. The fried soft shell crab with the cream based shrimp sauce is to die for.

edit: Brennans for brunch is excellent (and expensive). Bring really nice clothes for this one. Try a crabmeat omlette, cafe au lait, fresh juice and finish off your meal with flaming Bananas Foster for dessert.

6. Commander's Palace if you've got the money. For breakfast,
Petunia's is the best in the world.

8. The last time we were at Petunias it was a slow night and our waiter
was a really cute, gay guy. After our meal he took us on a tour of the whole house which is really beautiful.
