Does anyone know if cats are quarrantined when coming into this country?
I know Hawaii does that, even for cats and pets coming from the mainland.

I'm thinking of living a broad for a couple years, and know my cats won't need to be quarrantined getting into Prague (just need an offical form filled out by a vet here). But what about coming back? I'm not going to put them through getting quarrantined, so it'll mke or break my decision to move!

Thanks!

1. Here ya go
http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dq/animal.htm

Cats
Pet cats are subject to inspection at ports of entry for evidence of infectious diseases that can be transmitted to humans. If a cat appears to be ill, further examination by a licensed veterinarian might be required. There is no rabies vaccination requirement for cats. Following entry into the United States, all cats are subject to state and local vaccination requirements. All pet cats arriving in the state of HawaiiDisclaimer and the territory of Guam,Disclaimer even from the U.S. mainland, are subject to locally imposed quarantine requirements.

4. Thanks...if I'm reading this correctly, then what they mean by state and
local vaccinations DOES NOT mean that any state will quarrantine upon arrival into the US, just that some states and localities do require vaccinations and registration. I think when I lived in Seattle you had to register all pets, which I never did.

19. Cats may not have a rabies vaccination requirement...
But most shipping companies and airlines require that cats be fully vaccinated to travel.

I've traveled in CONUS (continental US)with my cats fairly often back in the 1990's, and the requirement for non-personal interstate transport is full veterinarian checkup and vaccination (including Rabies) before they'd allow them on the plane or train - that includes into California, which is one of the more strict states when it comes to coming into the state with regulated critters and items.

You should also check the DOT site; there are other regulations than medical to transporting live creatures.

http://airconsumer.ost.dot.gov/publications/animals.htm

Your veterinarian should have access to the requirements for transport, or should be able to direct you to the information. If your vet doesn't have the info, check with some of the breeders and breed clubs in your area; especially in Hawaii, they will have the information, as most major breeders will occasionally ship animals to the new owners. My father's cousin used to breed Himalayans in Hawaii; she's had people from all over the world come out to check out her registered adults cats for mating and/or their kittens and had to deal with the shipping at least once a year.

Good luck. It's always somewhat traumatic traveling with pets, so be extra alert to their needs during the travel time.

Haele

7. I returned from
Korea this past summer with two calico kittens and there was no quarrantine. THey were documented, had their shots and paper work signed by the military Vet on post; and the Korean's also had me fill out paperwork at the airport. Long flight for two kittens but they did fine and were thrilled to be out of their carrier by the time I got home after 14-16 hours of travel....

9. Just have your paper work for your cats
I've brought my dog through Miami and a cat from Canada -- with no problems.

I have friends who take their cats and dogs with them all the time -- in and out of the US.

You do need international health certificate -- from the country where they stayed.

I have yet to have US Customs check the paper work or the animal.

Be sure to check before you return to the US -- check the websites and check with the Vets who do the health checks for your pet's International travel. Rules and regulations do change.

As I mentioned last weekend when I brought my cat across the US boarder from Canada -- the Customs agent was most interested in my pharmacy purchases. He was damned disappointed that I only had a cat -- I even unzipped the carrier so he could see the cat. He was sort of pissed that I traveled to Canada and DIDN'T return with over the counter drugs!

10. What border crossing did you go through? I recently went from Seattle
to Vancouver and back--hadn't done that since before 9-11. Border agents on both sides were Grade A Assholes!!!!!!!!

15. I took the Port Angeles > Victoria
US Immigration was on the Canadian side (their computer went down) and the Customs was on Port Angeles side. The good part of the delay was on the return trip we saw an Orca feeding -- raising up out of the water and then diving and hitting it's tail on the water. Just like you see in the Orca photos! People were paying lots of money to take whale watching tours and we saw the Orca whale from the ferry.

I believe that the US customs and immigration agents are trained by ex-East German border guards. I spent a summer in Europe and crossed many border -- the East German were the absolute worst.

Vancouver is also one of the worst -- and some of the border guards have been arrested for theft (a few years ago).

What shocked me was the rudeness by the customs idiots toward the elderly and retired people on the ferry.

18. a lot people say that about the US customs people
Personally I had never any trouble and found them very helpful. The Post Offices are another story - those are apparently straight from the GDR.

11. Depends on the country of destination. USA? no. But the country of exit
may need documentation. Exit paperwork. Depends on the country. Check with their embassy or consulate. I have entered this country various times with animals and have had no problems. But I am sure you will be given the usual extra precautionary screening from the INS and customs officials as to your entry documents, whether you are US returning home, or a foreign national with the required entry documents, plus profiling, etc.... But the check should be made before disembarking the country you are leaving and their agricultural/veterinarian requirements. The US officials will probably not request these upon your entry home. (personally, I have never had to submit foreign documents for my pets coming back to US soil)

16. slap -- hell -- more like hiss and scratch
nasty species bigot.

The vast majority of cat owners -- also love dogs and other furkids.

My firkids get along. I don't have much use for people who don't like cats or pets.

By the way in several Muslim countries -- dogs entering on boats are killed (as in shot in the head).

HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Continental US, no problem if all shots are updated and you have animal health passport, i.e., taken to the vet and checked out within a couple of weeks, but not just before (incubation periode of some diseases).
Hawaii is diferent and some Islands like Trinidad and Tobago do not allow cats or dogs periods as they have done in native species.
Ask U$ embassy for regulations concerning Prague.
