Stupid question: What's the Buddy list for?

I can understand the ignore list... but adding someone to your buddy list doesn't appear to do anything... does it?

but for every person you add to your buddy list, it increases the amplitude of the warm fuzzy rays emitted by DU's servers by .002%. If everybody added everyone else to their buddy list we'd see the warm fuzzy rays amplified by roughly 54,000% causing Jerry Garcia to rise from the dead and become President. Spontaneous outbreaks of peace, free love and *really* good weed sprouting in every garden would immediately follow. Oh, and every single member of the BFEE would explode.
