3. The other computer was my server computer |
|
I got a Win2k server trial edition disc so I could set it up and install SQL Server 2k to study.
Replaced my Asus BX6 (P3-700 w/768mb ram) mobo with an Asus A7V8X-X mobo (Athlon XP 2400+ w/512MB RAM, not o/c)
With 2 SCSI III drives, UltraSCSI controller, NIC, DVD-ROM (IDE), CD-RW (SCSI), and a low-end video card (ATi Rage 128), it may have bee troo much.
It's something like a 3 year old power supply too.
But still, there are 300W power supplies made that work with Athlon.

4. Any ATX power supply will work fine. |
|
I'd recommend at least a 400 watt though, you can get a decent one for $75 or so.

5. I just bought one to replace... |

my other computer, whose p/s died.
I'll have to wait for my next paycheck, but it'll be 450W. So when I upgrade that mobo in a year to Athlon 64, I will be ready.
I did discover that my CPU + peripherals needed 322W. The P=IE calculations suggested my p/s could handle 350W, but that was not the case. I'm positive I did blow it, and not in a good way.
Still, better while I was at home than away at work. I hate the ATX design because components still draw power, even when off.
Which is sad, the computer was off at the time and I had it on for 45 minutes doing a Win2k server (trial ed) install that worked without a hitch.

6. I may upgrade to a Athlon 64 in the not too distant future myself. |
|
Everything I have will work fine with it, all I need to buy is motherboard and CPU. Of course I need to decide if I want to keep using my Vapochill for cooling or just go back to air cooling. If I stick with the Vapochill I'll need to buy a new mounting kit for it to fit the A64.
Ah well, I need to buy my new home theater speakers first, computer spending can come later :).

ever watch that tech show about computers, a guy takes the lid off his computer then takes a razor blade to seperate the wire strands, then re- routes them out of the air path.

9. I just use rounded cables that are easily routable out of the flow :) |
|
Of course with newer SATA drives, it's a non-issue since the cables are only about 1/4 inch wide. :).
