Is this an American thing or is it just on TV?

Do Americans usually wear their shows inside their homes? They always do on TV. Canadians in general don't. Please advise.

Summer - off, winter - on, unless my shoes are wet or muddy. My thirteen year old and his friends kick them off the second they come in the door.
