|
Come to Milwaukee, Jonathan!!
We had Indian tonight too. But it was Patak's, which is like the Indian answer to Ragu. Our grocery store recently started to carry it, and it's not too bad. We supplement it with naan from the Indian grocery store.

18. No... that was Taste of India. It moved down to Brookfield (still on BM). |
|
Saffron is also in Brookfield -- on the south side of the street, just across Calhoun from V. Richard's plaza. North Indian cuisine, very different from the cookie-cutter indian places (which are still good, mind you). The gosht biryani and butter chicken are exceptional, and the lunch buffet (which is different every day and features many dishes that aren't even on the menu) always has vegetarian dishes that will knock your socks off.
Truly a phenomenal restaurant. One of the ten best restaurants I've EVER been to, and there's nothing on the menu over $15 or so.

Have you tried Indian meals from Amy's Kitchen? They are good...matter paneer, saag paneer, samosa wraps.Full meals come with rice and dahl.

They're natural/organic vegetarian, so you might have to look in Natural food store, or in special section in the supermarket.

I can't say it's better than sex but it's up there. There is just something about the mixture of spicy hot goodness that just gets my blood and taste buds going. The Bread is beyond good. I prefer plain Naan to sop up the saucy goodness but Potato Naan or even Paratha can make my heart sing.
We are so fortunate to have a plethora of Excellent Indian joints within easy access.
When I was younger I lived on E. 6th street in NY and at that time my SO wouldn't set foot in the Indian restaurants there. Now he complains and says I should have gotten him drunk and dragged him in there.
I'm just glad that he's a true convert now so we can share together. Our 25th anniversary is coming up soon--Maybe a trip to India to Eat?

Perhaps a cucumber salad on the side. And be sure to order a flatbread, such as garlic naan. Enjoy with papaya juice or rosewater lemonade.

Those are my favorites. A lot of places have a diner for 1 or 2 you can buy which have different courses to try. A lot also have a buffet.

Also known as Palek Paneer. It's a creamed spinach with fresh cheese. Try the Bread.
If you are fearful of spicy stuff try the Chicken Birani. It's like chicken and Rice Indian Style. No sauce so not one of my favs but good for a beginner
If you like spicy and you eat meat try Lamb Vindaloo---Oh God it's an orgasm in my mouth!
I don't care for currys so I never recommend them.

29. You can't really KNOW Indian food until you've sampled the sweets |
|
Galub jamun, rus malai, pal payasam, halwa and jilebi are MUSTS
My memory's a little choppy but this is stuff I was raised on so here's a brief rundown:
Galub jamun are these balls of wheat ideally fried in butter and submerged in cardamom-seasoned rosewater.
Rus malai are these balls of cheese in a mixture of boiled milk and cardamom and pistachio
Pal payasam is a sort of rice pudding concoction only it should be painfully rich and fine to the taste
Halwa is clarified sugar w/ cardamom and pistachio
Jilebi is fried sugar that will kill you

34. Galub Jamun is very easy to make |
|
You use a batter made from Bisquick and Powdered Milk. Deep Fry then Soak in a simple syrup spiced with Cardamom Pods.
I like it better cold than hot.
Halwa is so good it will kill you.

Have you ever tried Malaysian food? There are some cross-over similar dishes (mango chicken, etc). They make this amazing bread, like a thinner naan, called roti canai. YUM! The Malay Satay Hut in Little Saigon in Seattle is awesome! :9

Not much atmosphere, but it's right off of Boren, on 12th Ave. S. Across the street, you'll find the Seattle Deli, where you can get great Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches - chicken, pork or tofu - all for between $1.75 and $2.25. They are really good! Worth the trip! :hi:

mmmm....now that's what I'm talking about. and I am Indian
If you want to try some more authentic stuff that you'll never ever see in an American restaurant ever, get an Indian cookbook (from an indian store) and bunch of spices to make it yourself. You will definitely stink up your house unless you use candles to burn off the airborne spices.
mmmm... and try Maggi or Kissan tomato sauce if you haven't yet. and Maggi masala noodles are like Ramen but way better. Every Indian store on God's green earth will carry it.

It's India's "Shangri La" an awesome vacation spot and Paul McCartney goes every year to Marari Beach. That's where my family is from but I've never lived there. I've visited tons of times. Very tropical stuff, lots of fish, coconut, prawns, rice, fruit, and alcohol. It's a very nice part of India.
Other places to check out: Bangalore, Chennai(Madras), Mumbai(Bombay), and New Delhi and old Delhi. Punjabi food is good, but they have it everywhere and you're even eating it tonight! Some of the dinkiest looking places can have the best-tasting food, but don't go if you worry about cleanliness.
Southern Indian isn't spicier but it's different. We tend to eat more rice and the northern guys eat more roti (very flat bread) Southern Indian food tends to have more meat since we have more Christians. Beef and pork can be scarce in northern Indian dishes.

There is a group of folks from that region here in the PNW. They volunteered for a non-profit I worked with a few years ago. They were lovely people who have a strong sense of community.
There is a Southern Indian Restaurant near me that I haven't tried yet. I don't know if I could ever eat Beef in an Indian dish but I love sea-food.
