This customer review is for Thomas Frank's book "What's the Matter with Kansas?"
Flawed Premise, October 23, 2004 Reviewer: New England Christian (Massachusetts) - See all my reviews The premise of the book is that Republicans have bamboozled Kanasas and the rest of middle America by paying lip service to their conservative social views, all the while screwing them over economically. The premise further states that economic issues -- class warfare -- are more important than social issues, and that middle america should therefore vote Democratic.
But if the Democrats truly believe that economic issues are more important, then why aren't they the ones setting aside their social views? The answer is simple: the Democrats were lying. They want to buy the vote of working class middle America in order to further their secularist, anti-family and anti-God agenda.

1. What the fuck does that mean? |
|
That's what I find so infuriating about the right wing idiots. They string nonsensical shit together, offer it with a "So, you see, it's obvious" attitude, and then the rest of 'em nod their heads and go "Unh hunh. You got it."
That doesn't make any sense at all.

Mr. Frank totally misses the mark, October 13, 2004 Reviewer: John. L. Smith (Memphis, TN USA) - See all my reviews Because Mr. Frank cannot possibly understand how people think in Kansas (or Mississippi, where I am from), he doesn't understand how badly his book misses the mark. Economic issues don't matter as much to folks in "fly over country". We've never had lots of money, and we don't expect to. So the idea of voting Democrat because of economic policies really doesn't appeal to us. What does matter to us is values. Money and jobs may come and go, but our Christian values are always with us. We will never support a party that supports, among other things: homosexual marriage, removing "under God" from the pledge of allegiance, abortion, abortion in the 9th month of pregnancy (partial birth), and federal funds for obscene art. Lets not forget the millions that the Democrats raise each year from the pornography industry. Mr. Frank misses the mark. It's about values, not economics. Now I have a question: What's wrong with Massachusetts?

Because that's exactly right. Having lived in "fly over country", you're all broke together. There's no delusion that somebody over in the next neighborhood is doing better than you, because your kids go to school with their kids and your kids come home and tell you how it really is. And even the ones that are doing well, aren't showy and are just as likely to show up to fix up the ballpark as the mom on welfare. So voting is about values. It's just that right wing values aren't the only values; family, community, work, honor, duty and integrity are values too. As Kerry said today, "That what you did for the least of these, you did for me" That's where we're missing the "fly over" vote, by not redefining values that rural people can relate to, then explaining the economic issues are connected.

Reviewer: B. Viberg (Atlanta, GA United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME) When I saw that he had used a quote from famous communist wanna be Janeane Garofalo I knew that I was in for some propaganda and propaganda it was. Frank should have called this book communist manifesto part two since his idea of America is a country where religion is seen as opium for the people and (...)rights, and other ungodly behavior is tolerated. Lenin,...ehh...I mean Frank can not have been a republican at all since the reason why people started voting Republican was because the Democratic party secretely hates American values and loved the former Soviet Union. Typical liberal junk from Thomas Lenin.
