Today is exactly 13 years since I moved to the US
On October 25th, 1991, (it was much warmer back then), my family arrived in JFK airport, from Moscow. We were the first to emigrate to the US, after fleeing Azerbaijan, and living in Russia for a couple of years. From New York, we flew to Hartford, which was going to be our new home.

I can't believe it's been 13 years! To this day, I thank my parents on regular basis for bringing us here. My sister and I both graduated high school and colleges here, my parents bought a house (all under Bill Clinton by the way)...and now I'm living on my own in New York. When I look at my cousins who are living in Russia, I'm glad we're out here (of course if my butt gets drafted in the near future, I might be singing a different tune) ;)

My father, who was member of Communist party (not by choice), has become very disgusted with US politics and Bush administration. He thought it couldn't get worse than what we had in USSR in terms of propaganda and government pushing their agenda that hurt people, but he was wrong. He went out and registered to vote in CT, and will vote for the first time next week, for John Kerry.

Just wanted to celebrate this date with my DU family.

14. You know, as corny as it sounds, it is...
In 1999, I graduated college and my parents bought a house in Rocky Hill, CT...Only 8 years ealier we came to the US with $500 in hand (we were only allowed to bring $100 per person), my parents had 3 kids on their hands, and didn't speak a word of English.

3. Happy anniversary!
Thanks for believing. Those of us who've lived here our entire lives can sometimes lose sight of what draws people from near and far to our fair country.

And thanks for caring. Our country's future is my future, your future and the world's future.

15. My great-grandmother is 94...She lived throught the Tsars,
the Bolsheviks, Communists, World War II, Cold War, Perestroika, and still going strong...She's my inspiration, if she could make it through all that, we can make it through a few more months of Bush.

:toast:

Tell your dad we are working very hard to fix what is broken here in the US; we are very glad he is here and registered to vote to help us toward that goal.

Thank you for your post. It is good for us to be reminded of what America is supposed to be, how it has fallen under bush*, and that many are here to help return our government to the people.

Give your dad a hug from a DUer way out west where the buffalo roam!

16. Will pass the message
I was a little surprised. He could've voted in 2000, cause we became citizens in 1997, but he chose not to. He never believed much in voting, guess that's cause our vote didn't really matter in USSR. But this year, he feels so strong of need to get Bush out, that he is going to vote.

10. has he drawn parallels
Edited on Mon Oct-25-04 09:18 AM by drumwolf
between the former Soviet Union and America under Bush? Or, even better yet, between the Communists' propaganda network and the RW media infrastructure here? It would be very interesting to hear what he had to say.

A while ago, we had another immigrant DU'er here, from Serbia, who drew parallels between the Rethugs here and the supporters of Slobodan Milosevic back in his home country. I found his post extremely interesting, because even before he'd said that I'd already been comparing Bush to Milosevic.

12. Oh yeah, the only difference is...
..in former USSR almost everyone knew it was propaganda, and just kind of waved it off, here, sadly, there's so many that believe Faux and Bush admin word for word.

21. Congrats!
Always feels good to hear a good immigration story. Russia has a chance with my generation (so long as Putin doesn't mess it up) because I really have no memory of Russia being the enemy. Just remember that they used to be able to blow the crap out of us!

22 by the way.

25. Thanks, I had a co-worker who always had a thing against immigrants
And once she was on a rant, and I casually said 'You do realize that's what I am, right?". She goes, "You don't really count, cause you're a citizen"

:wtf:
