ONE of the night sky’s most beautiful events — a total eclipse of the Moon — takes place on Thursday. Total lunar eclipses happen when the full Moon is exactly in line with the Earth and moves into its shadow. The eclipse will be visible from the whole of the British Isles.

The Moon will enter the lighter, penumbral shadow of the Earth at 1.05am and the darker umbral shadow at 2.14am. It will be totally eclipsed by 3.23am. During the eclipse the Moon will probably take on a brick-red hue as light from the Sun is refracted on to its surface by the Earth’s atmosphere.
