Somebody had said in a thread about The Grudge that the japanese were masters of a genre he called "claustrophobic dread".
How would you define this? Is it an actual genre, or just a term he made up?
Would a movie like Final Destination fit into that genre?
What other movies (besides The Ring) fit in that?

4. Like "Huis Clos", for instance? |
|
That's more claustrophobic loathing (l'enfer, c'est les autres) than claustrophobic dread.

10. oops don't read French |

Have only read it in English... is there more existential dread in French than in English? ;)
Another reason why Simone De Beauvoir was misinerpreted for all these years... poor translations, no?

I assume "claustrophobic dread" means there's something after you that you can't outrun, can't hide from, and no matter where you go or what you do, it will get you.
In Final Destination it was Death itself. You could hide out in a hospital under 24-hour watch, with the army posted outside, and it would get you.
Same thing with The Ring, except there WAS one thing that could stop it, but it wasn't obvious.
With The Grudge it was the same; it was going to get you no matter what. Maybe burning the house down would have stopped it, but they made it clear that she was unsuccessful at burning it down.
