Do you keep the money when you are overpaid by a checker? |
|
Another thread made me think about this. Everyone points it out when they have been shortchanged. But how many people point it out when they are given too much money back? Say, the clerk gives you a ten instead of a five by mistake. Do you keep it? Or do you point out the mistake?
Be honest!

Once I found a $20 in my grocery bag and I actually drove back to the store with it. I've worked retail too long. :)

If I notice right then, I give it back.
A few months ago I did some school shopping at the nearest Old Navy, about 25 miles away. When I got home and looked over the receipt closely, I realized they didn't charge me for one of the shirts I got. It was about $12. I felt bad, but not bad enough to drive another 50 miles round trip to pay for the shirt. Now that I'm reading this, I see I could have mailed them a check. Ehhh, I didn't.

25. Almost always...they argue. |
|
Some years back I sent my son (then ten years old) into a McDonald's to buy some stuff with a hundred dollar bill. (I was just really trying to get change.) He came back with the food and five twenties, a ten and some ones. I told him it was too much money, and I sent him back to get it straight. He came back and said they refused to take it. So, then I had to go in (ratty clothes, no makeup, really pissed...about the no makeup part)to give them back their damned money. The man just wouldn't believe me. I wound up giving him a twenty and leaving. This still makes me angry. He treated me with such disdain. Maybe if I'd been wearing makeup...

I used to work a cash register back in the days when you actually had to know how to count out change. The cashiers were also responsible for any shortages in the cash drawer.

35. Cashiers are still responsible for shortages. |
|
I've been a retail monkey for most of my working life and I can tell you cashiers still bear the responsibility for drawer shortages. With employee theft as rampant as it is nowadays, managers do not want to hear you accidentally gave out too much change to a customer. They automatically suspect theft, report it to Loss Prevention and your ass is watched like a hawk. If you're not fired outright, which happened to a co-worker of mine at my last retail gig, at a major department store chain.
I can't believe people would even fathom keeping the money. WTF is wrong with people?

In my experience, the occasion has been EXTREMELY rare when someone has NOT come back to give back the overage. (to my knowlege, of course) I thank and apologize profusely, and praise their honesty and honor to point of nearly embarrassing them. It's usually me shortchanging them,(especially with POS ATM money back and stamps)because we're too busy jawing about: the weather, the Giants, the Niners, the latest astonishing outrage committed by that beady-eyed pieca shit.

And only a total douchebag would. Most of my working life has been spent in retail, and what people who don't work retail don't understand is, when a cashier makes a mistake like that, it means they're gonna come up short in the drawer at the end of the day, and that means big trouble with management.
I'm a reasonably intelligent and alert person, and I have made the mistake of giving out too much change when working registers. Retail can be a hectic environment to work in and a lot of times you can get frazzled, especially when it's a Saturday and there's a long checkout line or it's during the holidays or something and people are needing you to do 50 things at once.
So, I guess what I'm saying is, PLEASE give back the change. Don't be a douchebag and potentially cost this person their shitty $7/hr job.

It was weird, too. I had gone through a self-checkout line, paid and everything, then put the bags in the cart and realized I had forgotten literally two packs of gum. I was embarrassed to think that I had almost accidentally shoplifted them.
So I started up the self-checkout again, scanned the two packs of gum, and gave the machine a $20 bill (all I had in cash, and I wasn't going to put two packs of gum on credit). The machine gave me like $6 and then told me to get the rest of the change from the cashier.
So I stopped up the cashier station, she gave me my change, and I left. When I got home, I discovered that the cashier had given me the whole amount in change... so it was like I got the gum for free and the store paid me an extra $4 bucks or so. This obviously defeated the purpose of not wanting to shoplift the gum. I didn't go all the way back to correct a $6 mistake... and I'm not sure -- maybe the MACHINE will get chewed out by the manager and lose its job. Maybe?

I give it back every single time without even thinking. I've gievn back 20s before, I believe I'd do the same with hundreds. In fact I'm certain I would because boy would that ever be bad for the cashier. I've made a serious commitment to be good instead of evil.
And yet ...
I make plenty of money and I live comfortably. If that were not the case I'd *like* to believe I'd do the same thing but who knows?

I deposited 300 bucks. The girl gave me my deposit receipt and my 300 back. I drove off. The next day I returned it to her. She asks me - Can I help you ? I handed her the cash and said - yes yesterday you gave me 300 too much. She thanked me because it was going to come out of her check. She looked like a single Mom. I felt better after giving it back.
