Newbies, what prompted you to come to DU and how did you find out about it

8. My activist friend in DC

steered me to the Top 10 Conservative Idiots List maybe three years ago. I was unsure of how to work on the internet back then and didn't understand the acronyms, etc., so I educated myself by "lurking" on DU. This year, I started volunteering at Democratic HQ in my county, got very rushy registering new voters and assembling yard signs, etc. and felt I had the right to put in my two cents worth. DU ROCKS!

I heard Randi mention it on AAR quite a while ago. I visited the site and have been coming back ever since. Finally last week got to a point that I just couldn't read the posts but had to respond and post myself. Still waiting for the privilege to post - but that will come in time. For now I'm just happy I'm with people that think alike and I could vent. Thanks DU!!!

17. Known about DU for a while but I've always liked to join

conservative boards to hone my debating skills. Then one of the moderators got pissed at me because of my views (USMessageboard.com under topic of Politically Incorrect in General USA Chat if interested - Same name as here) and banned me for 24 hours.

I came here for a breather and have found it to be much more enjoyable!

I also discovered DU while lurking at Free Republic in November 2000(I never joined there as I did not consider myself right wing enough). I kept seeing comments like you've got to see what those idiots, morons etc at DU are saying. So I came over here and lurked at both sites and found DU to be much more rational and closer to my political views. My politics have moved back to the Democratic Party over the past 4 years (I did not vote in the Republican primary this year) and now will be voting for John Kerry and mostly for Democrats (for the first time since the 1970's).

Lurking at and eventually joining DU and actually listening to what George W Bush, Ann Coulter, Alan Keyes etc. are saying and observing what the Bush Administration has been doing have brought me back to the Democratic party which I left in 1976.
