"The Day the Earth Caught Fire"
Best end of the world movie, ever.

Just got it on DVD. Very natural storytelling; a witty and moving script; great performances and flawed characters (the hero is a divorced alcoholic). An adult film.

Also, one of the best movies set in a newsroom I've ever seen.

4. he has a commentary track on the DVD
though I haven't played it yet.

I didn't know he was still alive. He's nearly 100.

I liked the ambiguous ending...plus it had good special effects and good character development, like you noted...
