I can't imagine how hard it must be for Americans of good conscience these days, and a good number of them are here.

I'll start with one dear to me:

1. I thank the real America

2. I'd like to thank America for turning out some top-notch scientists ...

... like Stephen Jay Gould and Carl Sagan (both of whom would definitely have something to say about the importance of voting next week). Also Wally Broecker, and Robert Watson, and a whole bunch of others who gave us the heads-up about global warming. Americans played an enormous role in learning about environmental problems and coming up with solutions -- national parks, the Clean Air Act, the Endangered Species Act, the EPA -- these have since been copied by other countries. I look forward to the day when the US can resume its normal role at the forefront of environmental science and policymaking.
