Rolling Stone: Counting Crows bass player a right wing fanatic or a joke?
Did anyone see the latest Rolling Stone, the one with Kerry on the cover? There is a letter from someone claiming to be Matt Malley, the Counting Crows bass player.

The letter reads like a joke. It talks about Bush being the greatest president in American history or something like that and it attacks Rolling Stone for not supporting Bush for president, because he stood up and showed the world how tough America is.

It looks like it's supposed to be a real letter, but it's so ridiculous that you wonder if someone sent it in to make him look stupid.

Does anyone know the politics of the Counting Crows?

4. Great to know the singer is a Kerry supporter!
Thanks for the info, that bass player must be a real idiot if that letter was serious and if it really was from him. I thought it was a parody when I first read it, but then I wasn't sure. :)

5. Matt's an interesting guy.
He is seriously involved with a religious cult called Sahaja Yoga (http://www.sahajayoga.com/) which is pretty horrifying. His wife was chosen for him, and there young son will be sent away to a SY boarding school before too long. His massive earnings go mostly into the service of the cult.

Having said that, one of my close friends met and partied with the band about two years ago, (politics did not come up in the discussions, tho) and he came away saying that Matt was the only one who seemed like anything approximating an adult. Charlie (keyboards) was an arrogant dickhead, Adam (lead singer) was drunk, per usual, etc. His impression was that they're a bunch of 14 year old spoiled brats in 40 year old bodies, except Matt, who was more like a very serious 21 year old religious zealot who wants to recruit the whole world.

I know they replaced their drummer after their first album, and they've added Dan Vickrey and David Immergluck, but I wasn't aware they had replaced Matt? To my knowledge, Matt's the only bass player they've had??

I know this is an unpopular sentiment on DU, but I prefer to enjoy music without worrying about the politics of the band members, so I can't comment on any of their political leanings.

8. There are a lot of asshole bass players...

...except for me.

Bassists and drummers get knarly because we have to anchor bands led by insecure egomaniacs. No offense intended, just my experience. But try having a kick-ass band without us (unless you use machines like the techno dudes).

I've listened to more Counting Crows than I care to admit to. They are about as enlightened and talented as most 18-year-old musicians I grew up with. I don't know what the singer is going to do for a living when he runs out of things to bitch about.

If this bass player is as you described, then they got what they deserved.

Just my opinion, based on my 35 years of playing and touring. Not necessarily the total reality.

BTW I have a listing of all the guitarists in LA. It's called the "phone book."

(LOL)
