Rant topic: the incurious |
|
I don't know about anyone else, but people who have no curiosity piss me off royally. It's like they have no desire to learn about anything, they are willing to take someone else's opinion without even hazarding a guess or showing any interest in anything, and they often will resort to a complete show of fear if something challenges them or makes them go that little bit further in finding out something new.
What is it about these people? It's like they don't want to give their brains any exercise, they don't want to put forth even the smallest effort in order to find out more about anything new to them, and they actually treat that need as a nuisance or complete inconvenience.
I shudder to think what my life would be like without curiosity. I was one of those kids that get to be really annoying: "Why is the sky blue?" "Where does a rainbow come from?" "What is rain?" etc, etc. If I ever gave up my quest for knowledge, no matter how mundane, no matter how prevocative the questions--or the answers, might be, I would know that that was the day I die.
I see a lot of this in the conservatives. When they try to argue with liberals, they all just repeat the party line. They have no desire to fully kick in and learn the truth for themselves. I also see this in a lot of fundamentalist christians, who swallow the whole bible as if it were divine.
I grew up in an environment where intelligence was secondary to wisdom, curiosity, determination and common sense. I think that many who find their IQ level is high simply stop learning because they achieve arrogance, and feel they know all there is to know. If I ever got to that point, I hope someone will shoot me for essentially ending my life at that point--when you don't possess curiosity, you might as well give up living.

1. I'm with ya on that one, and I don't get it, either |

And I've seen the lack of curiosity in the well-educated as well as within the rank and file average joe.
I couldn't imagine going through life not being interesting in things, wanting to know more about stuff. I love to go to the book store and rifle through books about stuff I know nothing about so that I can learn me a thing or two.

...and also, why aren't you men more nosy? Like people tell you, "We went (insert location) saw (insert person), and at at (insert restaurant)." And you men won't ask, who what where when how, etc!! UGH...that is so annoying. Duckie
