BRIDGETON -- Whether a coincidence or an alarming trend, the fact of the matter is police here have arrested and charged three 15-year-old boys with driving under the influence of alcohol in less than five days time.
Not only are these boys 5-plus-years below the legal age to consume alcohol, they can't legally -- or, presumably, safely -- operate a car in this state even when stone-cold sober.
The first DUI arrest of a young area resident came last Tuesday night when an East Avenue boy was pulled over on East Commerce Street. He was later identified as the driver of the striking vehicle in a hit-and-run accident on Church Street earlier in the night.
Early Saturday morning, police arrested another 15-year-old city resident -- this one of North Pearl Street -- for driving under the influence.
Police initiated a traffic stop of the vehicle the 15-year-old North Pearl Street resident was driving when another motorist flagged down an officer to report the vehicle almost hit hers at the intersection of Walnut and East Commerce Streets.
The 15-year-old was pulled over in an alleyway off Irving Avenue, where police ruled that he was drunk. Breathalyzer tests at the police station later revealed the boy had a 0.13 percent blood-alcohol content, 0.05 percent higher than the legal cutoff for adult motorists.
In addition to driving under the influence, he was charged with underage driving while intoxicated and possession and consumption of alcohol by a minor. He was also issued traffic summonses for failure to keep right and failure to wear a seat belt.
Early Sunday morning, the third 15-year-old drunken driving case police handled within five days nearly resulted in a collision with a police patrol vehicle.
Fortunately, this 15-year-old alleged drunken driver -- an Upper Deerfield Township resident who had taken his father's vehicle without permission -- came to a stop just before hitting the police car, according to Sgt. James Battavio's investigation report.
