2. this is a GREAT thread
i've been wanting to start a similar one (about which celebs are repugs and so forth) but i'm the same way, if i find out someone is a repuke, i no longer like or respect them... can't help it, just the way it is...

ok, to your question... i've always LOVED roseanne, but someone said recently she was talking about "how cute" bush is... now i don't know if this qualifies her as a republican, but if it does, i'll never look at her the same again...

oh, and reba mcentyre... one of the VERY few country singers i've liked, but she's a repuke (as i'm sure most country singers are)

36. She said at the Lane Bryant show that we're going backwards...
I don't know when the "he's hot" thing happened (maybe early in his term?), which is plenty gross,

but at the Lane Bryant show in February:
"Roseanne, who has slimmed down a bit herself, went on to tell of her love for "the Hitler channel" (which is apparently what she calls the History Channel).

Suggesting that Bush's Washington has come to resemble the Fuhrer's Berlin, she added: "We're going back to that time now." That comment gave model Tyson Beckford cause to nudge Dubya's cousin Billy Bush, who was in the audience."
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/gossip/story/57628p-53997c.html

I have a really, really hard time thinking of her as a Republican. Plus she managed to piss Poppy Bush off...was it her singing of the National Anthem? I don't remember now.

37. Yes. All of them.
*rolls eyes*

I swear to God the mob mentality around here is terrifying sometimes. I mean, I dislike republican policies just as much as the next guy, but some of my best friends are Republicans. The fact is, just because someone is 'Republican' doesn't mean they're 'scum.'

It seems like people at DU oversimplify and overdramatize issues just as badly as the Freepers sometimes.

Are you really going to tell me BOB HOPE is scum?

81. Bob Hope WAS scum.
Not necessarily because he was a repub...but because he thought that creating a golf course that only the wealthy can afford is a great use of virgin land. It was good of him to visit the troops...so that cancels some of his scumness.

4. Several country singers...
Clint Black
Vince Gill (didn't care for his music but liked him as a person from what I knew of him. Also, he did come out in defense of the Dixie Chicks so I give him even more credit...)
several others I can't think of at the moment...
and- I'll admit it- I actually like a good deal of Toby Keith's music prior to his "outing" himself as a jingoistic piece of right-wing crap. I try not to let political views affect how I feel about people's music, art, etc., (at least not negatively) but can't help it that Keith's music truly started to suck incredibly beginning with "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue."
Anyway, the right-wing political bent of recent songs has driven me more and more away from modern country music, but I really don't think I'm missing out on all that much...

89. Conservatives defended Doherty when she was first having problems
I remember when she started having problems on "Beverly Hills 90210," some conservatives argued that liberal Hollywood was persecuting "poor " Shannon because she was a Republican. They ignored the role that her own actions, which led to her getting arrested, might have played in her problems with the show's producers (personal responsibility is for the "little people").

His website has some funny shit, he shares my hometown, and I found him very witty. But about 6 months ago, his column (which I would then read religiously) would start having right-wing crap rhetoric in them, and then I quit reading it. So I did some further reaserch, and found out that he was a guest host at one time for a radio show on the Minneapolis reactionary radio station, 1280 The Fascist, and a fervent * supporter. Now, it's not like I don't think he's funny anymore, but I can't look at his writing or his website the same way again. It kind of taints my opinion of him.

Also, with the old-time Hollywood people, like Jimmy Stewart, I can't hold their Republican status against them. They were in the age before today's ignorant, hate spewing neo-cons. Back in the past, many Repubs could have been considered decent human beings, worthy adversaries if you will. Not like today's R's, certainly.

50. I agree...
there was a change in Republican leadership and philosophy. In the past, the Republican party openly acknowledged that there was, and should be, something called the public interest and that good people could, and did, disagree with them. I believe that there were principled, conscientious Republicans who knew what their political convictions were and why they held them, and could dispute with Democrats without calling them traitors, scumbags, or idiots. Those days seem to be behind us, even though (or perhaps because) the Republicans have risen to political ascendancy and now control the country. Honestly, I don't know what else they want, unless it's to establish military theocracy and silence or eliminate all opposition.

27. Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg
I'm not sure if they're Republicans, but they supported the war in Iraq. I think they did this because they believed Bush was telling the truth about WMDs. Man, were they stupid!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/2282774.stm

Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise have joined the list of celebrities making their views known on Iraq, speaking out in favour of President George Bush's stance.
The pair made their feelings known at a press conference in Rome, where they have been promoting the Italian release of the blockbuster Minority Report.

"If Bush, as I believe, has reliable information on the fact that Saddam Hussein is making weapons of mass destruction, I cannot not support the policies of his government," Spielberg said.

The director added that those policies were "solid and rooted in reality".

Cruise also spoke out in support of the US president.

"Personally, I don't have all the information President Bush has," said the star.

"But I believe Saddam has committed many crimes against humanity and his own people.

"I did not say I support a war with Iraq," Spielberg said in a statement issued by his production company, DreamWorks. "I do not have access to information that only the President has which might cause me to take a different position. In any case, it was never my intention to give an endorsement of any kind." Separately, Cruise told an interviewer he had been misquoted about supporting an invasion."

Tom Cruise has already given $1000 to Barbara Boxer's re-election campaign. He has also made some serious contributions to Majority 2000 ($20,000) which was a PAC to help elect more Democrats. I believe Tom Cruise's "pro-war" statement was along the same lines as many other celebrities trying to look supportive & patriotic for the troops.

Spielberg is a major player in the democratic party and his wife Kate Capshaw has been a major advocate for choice.

Both are bigtime Democrats!

Definitely Kelsey Grammer, he subbed for Letterman, was promoting his new show and I was sick that he would come out so strong with his statement I am a Rethugligan. I don't care for him anymore, can't even tell you what his new show is.

Pissed at Rob Lowe for arnold support and have suspected that Oprah is a thug and that REALLY makes me fell sick.

She's the best character on that show. She's just an awesome actress. I really like her in those Albertson's commercials she's doing now.

When I found out she was conservative I was so so sad. I can't watch her anymore without thinking that. Really, of all the conservative actors and actresses, she's the one I was most upset about.

Is she tolerably Republican? I read some online excerpts from her latest book and it's hard to tell. She's definitely religious. Is she a social conservative (inexcusable) or just a fiscal conservative (acceptable if you squint your eyes just right)?

Course being a Bush supporter is hard to stomach no matter how much you squint.

80. Squinting...
... an excellent choice of words. Very creative.

I'm not sure if I'm willing to squint anymore. In earlier years, I might have seen no harm in a live and let live approach. But they've taken advantage of my good nature--of everyone's good nature--and have run roughshod over us all.

But, that's a topic for another thread on another day.

67. Brian Dennehy and Rob Lowe
I've always liked Dennehy in movies. But unfortunately for me, knowing someone's politics really affects my ability to appreciate their work. Though I know that isn't right, I can't help it. The future is too important. The issues are too important. I am so opposed to the phiolosophy of conservatives that knowing that someone is a Republican alters my opinion of their work. It gets in the way of their performance. Rob Lowe used to be a Democrat, but is now supporting Arnie. He's indicated he wants an active role in his campaign. His reasoning was that he knows Arnie is a "good husband and father." In the interview I saw, Lowe gave no other reasons. Well, that certainly qualifies Arnie to run the world's 6th largest economy. I won't be watching Lowe's new show. Petty I know. But the guy lost my support with his brain-addled jump to Arnie. Makes me think it was just a publicity grab on Lowe's part to pump his new show.

77. Well...
Well... I can't really say in good conscious that my enjoyment for an entertainer rests (even part and parcel) with their political opinions. If they are excellent at the job they do, that is really good enough for me. If I enjoy an actor/actress or a writer, it is because they act and/or write well. I can't just decide all of a sudden that I dislike the Bob Hope movies I've loved over the years simply because he held a different political opinion than me.

Or, from another perspective: I think Gore Vidal is just a little *too* left for me and I disagree with many of his social positions; but DAMN! that guy can write better than any contemporary social commentator I can think of (in my opinion). I honestly enjoy reading his stuff, while still disagreeing with a lot of his ideas. And it's not to rant at his stuff or to get myself worked up, it because I think he's a craftsman at what he does and I'm always amazed and delighted ay his ability to write.

If the entertainer sucks, then I'm going to maintain he/she sucks regardless of his/her political orientation. On the other hand, if the entertainer is great, I really don't care if he voted Republican since '52.

A conservative friend of mine once told me, "I hate Tim Robbins' movies, he's a damn lefty". I thought that was silly. I still think it's silly.

85. Here are some of mine
Many country singers. I think Toby Keith's stuff before his last two albums is decent, and think Darryl Worley, Brooks And Dunn, Martina McBride, and more have talent. Vince Gill, George Strait, Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire are talented and seem like friendly people. Must just be misled. Faith Hill is attractive.

Former MTV VJ Kennedy: seems cool. I know her views lean Libertarian, but she defends the Repukes everywhere she goes.

Emma Caufield: attractive

Belinda Carlisle: has great music, but punk music and Republicans don't go together.

Cal Ripken: class act

Joe Gibbs: think he was a great coach

Bob Hope: think he was a great comedien

BTW - I'm not completely sure Britney Spears is a Repuke, but she was for the Iraq war and she's ignorant politically.

That's all for now.

101. Jamie Lee Curtis and Barbra Streisand
Ok, they're not republicans, at least we know Babs isn't, but I was shocked and disappointed to learn they were such good buds of Ahnold. Even tho Streisand isn't behind him for governor (Curtis is) I can't understand how Babs could hear all the stories of Ahnold and enjoy having dinner with him.

The stories are so numerous and so revulting, either she knows for a fact they're not true - and how could she know that, or she's in serious denial.

I know she was a staunch defender of Clinton and that a private life is a private life, but these aren't stories of affairs, these are stories of, at least in one case, sexual assault.

Any celeb, or anyone else for that matter, who endorses or is a close bud of Ahnold loses esteem in my book.
