1. Ridley Scott
and the first Alien movie

Claustrophobic tale featuring a perfect killing machine vs. space truckers armed with flamethrowers and cattle prods.

Genius!

4. GMTA!
Look at our silmultaneous posts!

You know what sucks about the Alien franchise, though? "Acidic blood of convenience". Even in the excellent first movie, the Alien blood is highly acidic, but onloy when that is convenient to the plot.

2. I'm partial to John Carpenter's "The Thing", and the orig version of...
"The Vanishing". Both are claustrophobic nightmares.

The first in the "Alien" series is hard to beat, for sheer terror.

48. ya know, the Exorcist is one of the Classics.
I was scared to death of it when I was a kid. For movies to rent for Halloween : Carrie, The Shining, the Amityville Horror, The Original Night of the Living Dead.... I could go on....To me tho, the premise for the scariest teen slasher flick of all times is "Nightmare on Elm Street" Freddie Kruger was wild. ya know, You can outrun Jason, provided you aren't a chick and don't fall repeatedly, HOWEVER, YOU have to SLEEP sometime!!!

That movie never gets old. Aliens was pretty sweet too.

"Get away from her you bitch!"

Now if you want a little cheese in your diet you can't go wrong with a Michael Madsen flick I caught on Showtime late the other night. It's called Vampires Anonymous and it's freaking hilarious. Vampires in 12-step. It's intentionally cheesy and quite funny.

Anything with Vincent Price:

House on Haunted Hill (has to be with him!!!)
The House of Wax
The Pit and the Pendulum

If it was written by Edgar Allen Poe, there is a probably a movie of it starring Vincent Price.

"The Shining"--the original one with Jack Nickolson and Shelly Duvall
"The Haunting"--with Catherine Zeta Jones

Roman Polanski's "Rosemary's Baby". Mia Farrow is really good in that movie to.

Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds"

Other contenders:

George Romero - Night of the Living Dead trilogy

Roman Polanski - "Rosemary's Baby," "The Tenant," "Repulsion"

David Cronenberg - "The Fly," "Videodrome," "The Brood"

Peter Jackson - "Dead Alive" aka "Braindead"

Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining"

"Love Object" (about a shy guy who buys a RealDoll and dresses it to look like a girl he has a crush on at work)

"Cabin Fever" (tongue in cheek, but still good)

Brian DePalma - "Carrie"

Sam Raimi - "Evil Dead 2"

John Carpenter - "The Thing"

"The Omen" (the first one, not the others)

49. A few others:
* Andrzej Zulawski's "Possession" starring Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill with special effects by the guy who did "E.T." - absolutely bizarre and unforgettable, Adjani got a Cannes Best Actress award for it

* Invasion of the Body Snatchers

* The British series of "Quatermass" alien invasion films

* "Ultraviolet" -- a British horror six-episode mini-series available on DVD -- ultracool series about vampires vs. vampire hunters in the real world with great writing and acting

* Hitchcock's "Psycho"

* Ken Russell - "Lair of the White Worm," "Altered States," "The Devils"

* Alejandro Jodorowsky - "Santa Sangre"

* Fritz Lang - "M" starring Peter Lorre

54. Most of my favorites have been said already, but I'll add a few
Poltergeist-not really all that scary but damn entertaining.

In the Mouth of Madness-not a horror classic but has some pretty damn creepy scenes

Jaws-maybe not the best Halloween movie, but it always makes me afraid to go in the water!

The Blair Witch Project-if you're going to rip on this movie, well go ahead. But I loved it. Very original, and very good.

The Legend of Hell House-really good 70's haunted house movie. Great cast too.

Fright Night-great horror/comedy with Roddy McDowell.

60. "The Haunting" -- a sure bet.
1963, black and white, directed by Robert Wise and starring Julie Harris, Claire Bloom and Russ Tamblyn; based on the novel "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson.

An anthropologist and several strangers participate in an experiment to spend several days in a mansion that was "born bad" to determine whether there is such a thing as a haunted house. The movie features no ghosts, specters, demons, zombies, mutant animals, giants, freaks, blood, gore or monsters -- but it's the scariest and by far the best horror movie I've ever seen. Phenomenal camera work, direction and editing; eerie music, great sound; the set decorator had a field day; the house is to die for; and some chilling special effects that were unique in their day.

Some people regard it as campy, so I recommend seeing it alone to get the full effect. Make yourself a cup of hot cocoa, grab a few cookies, get in your PJs, turn off all the lights, find a comfy chair and a lap blanket, and prepare for an hour-and-a-half of raw fear.

Avoid the '90s remake like the plague. The original is easily available for rental or purchase. Enjoy ...

It IS one of the BEST horror movies! It is not always "jump out of your seat scary," but it is a great movie! Exorcist 3 was very creepy! Wanna watch something really scary? Try C-SPAN, they still have copies of the Republican Convention! If that doesn't shatter and scare your soul, nothing will!

62. Dead Alive
Directed by Peter Jackson (yeah, the LOTR guy). It's about as gory as a zombie movie can get, yet it's campy enough to make it absolutely hilarious.

Best line is by the Preacher (who, by chance, knows kung-fu): "I kick ass for the lord!!! *proceeds to go hong-kong-fooey on a group of punks*"
