Do you think the Daytime DU'ers are different from the Nighttime Du'ers?
I've noticed that at night the discussion flows freely on all topics, even the touchy ones like religion. I've never seen a thread get locked late at night. During the day, however, there is a heavy handed attempt to control the discourse. Anyone else have an observation on this?

12. Not quite.. It depends on the posts and alerts
FYI.. moderators are not roving bands of wild-eyed, "locking-wand" toting agitators.

All threads have possibilities when they start..

All it takes to "ruin" one, is for a whole bunch of attacks to start popping up..

The alerts start flying, and before you know it, the whole thread has been turned to a flaming pile of..well you know :)

Moderators do not ignore alerts, and are not blind to threads that start to go seriously awry....

Because of the miracle of timezones, there are moderators here day and night, and the alert sytems works 24/7...

Locking and deleting is a consensus thing..It's not a unilateral thing like our glorious leader, * prefers..

Threads start out fine and sometimes just end up

18. So it is the number of alerts that determines the fate of the thread?
Edited on Tue Oct-26-04 04:03 PM by sister moon
If a certain number of participants finds something offensive--by their own subjective standard--then the discussion is ended?
On edit:In the 2 examples I saw today I did not see anything I would describe as an attack. Some sarcasm, irony, and a bit of snide attitude but not an attack. And why don't these alerters simply leave the conversation and look for something more to their liking? Help me out here, I'm baffled by what I'm finding on DU lately.

20. Ideal vs. reality - your post is a stellar example
Edited on Tue Oct-26-04 04:05 PM by Selwynn
Your post is a stunning example of the difference between the two.

I think it is impossible to deny that everyone, moderators and community a like have been a little more "on edge" lately.

I'd rather a post that said, moderators are people too, and they are doing the best they can during an extremely stressful and challenging time. Following the election, as the community begins to settle back down into a new four year cycle, it will be time to evaluate and examine how things could be handled better, what worked well, what didn't work well, etc.

We acknowledge that there are problems and there will always be problems because we're all a bunch of humans. But over time we hope to continue addressing the ones we can and constantly promoting the most free and open community we possibly can.

Feel free to post back and say, "what he said." :) :) :)

4. I've noticed there are more people
on at night which means more responses/observations. Conversely, threads can disappear at an alarming rate, too, as folks pipe up with their own observations. It's all good!

5. There is a distinct "shift change," though.
I always work till 7 pm, and around 6 there is generally an entirely different crew of people I don't recognize. And ALL the stories of the day pretty much get reposted.

I start work at 6pm. I'm not usually up until 1 or 2 so I'm just catching up on the latest news by the time you are almost done with work. I lot of us on this board work nights so that's why you see new threads about 'old' news here sometimes.

8. Maybe controlled isn't the right word
I see a pattern of discussions being completely SHUT DOWN because one or two participants--why they are participating I can't quite figure out--think the discussion isn't civil enough or isn't a valid topic. I've seen this twice this afternoon.

22. Let's explain it this way ...
I will try to explain it in a way that won't get us into any trouble!

There is a very pretty, pretty country -- and that country is big. In that big pretty country there are many people. Many of the people are one way and many other people are another way and yet many other people are yet another way. In fact in this big pretty country there are many kinds (ooops forgot and mentioned kinds of people!) -- let's just say there are many people who are one way and many people who are another way and yet many other people who are yet another way.

Some of the people of this big pretty country talk to each other. Others people in the big pretty country kind of talk to each other by typing into their computers and their written words end up in a certain place where others can read their words.

If the people of this big pretty country who talk by typing into their computers mention certain topics --about the fact that there are people who are one way and there are people who are the other way and yet more people who are yet other ways -- and they do so during the day time, then they may not be able to talk to each other by typing into their computers for very long.

But if the people of this big pretty country talk through their typewriters at nite-time and mention that some of the people of the big pretty country are the one way and some are the other way and yet others are yet other ways, then maybe, just maybe, they will be able to continue to talk through their typewriters and read what they have all said until it is time to put on their jammies and have sweet sweet dreams about their pretty pretty big country!

27. Yeah,
I always thought I lived in a big pretty country where some of the people were able to listen to the other people even if they thought those other people were wrong or didn't like their language or ideas. If fact, I thought the old dead guys that started the pretty country in the first place put a high value on being able to talk about anything at all. And I have always understood that we are all free to walk away from any conversation we don't like without being able to make the other people shut up just because we disagree. How silly am I?

14. I think a lotta DU'ers are at work
There is a similar difference between weekend DU, and weekday.
I think it comes from the timezones, as morning/day DU includes
europe, whilst evening/night DU has the pacific rim/asia who are
asleep when europe is waking up to the daily news.

As well, the center of mass seems towards europe/east coast, which
would explain your daytime DU, and i'm always amazed at what the
night crew have gotten up to when the UK sun rises at 2am east coast time.

Topically, i couldn't say. I think the further you get from the
timezones of power, the less likely you are to be interested in those
kinds of chats, and more in the eccentric 2nd order stuff.

I would be fascinated to see a thread with the following columns in
the database joined in: Location on earth, timezone, localtime.
It might very well shed some light on how people express opinions
in blog.

16. I've read where people are more introspective at night
whether they're day people or not. I personally get more emotional at night and I feel like I think better. I'm a night worker.

You an also get the next day's news early in the AM if you stay on late enough! I wake up sometimes the next day already knowing what the main headlines will be on the nights I don't work.

40. Good analysis.
When I'm at work, most DUers are asleep so I don't get many responses until I come in the next morning. You miss a lot of the flame fests.

I also think that when people are posting from work during the day they often have to run away and work so sometimes their posts can be shorter and blunter than people posting from home.

I'd bet most flame wars get started between 9am and 5pm EST.

I keep a DU window open during the day while I'm working.

My daytime original posts are mostly ignored during working hours.

At night, people reply.

30. Well, you've only been here one month, so maybe you're still learning.
There is no heavy-handed attempt to control discourse. There are people who will call bullshit when they hear it, and let you know that. This is a moderated forum, so of course there is some control over what people say. You may think it's heavy handed, I don't.

In fact, I like that a lot of the sexist crap, for example, gets cut out. I'd like to see more of it eliminated, actually. We are supposed to be a progressive board, so when threads that are not generally respectful get started, some people are going to complain.

If you aren't interested in this, you can always hit the Yahoo boards, or any of the thousands of other places that permit absolutely anything.

39. unemployed
Considering many of us are without jobs, or have irregular ones, I think there is a smattering of a variety of people on at various times. I have no job, so I hit DU all the time. I am more likely to post at night, than the day because at night, I am being responsive, during the day, I am reading DU and sending out resumes!

Of course, other than the unemployed, there are also those of us who are insomniacs! I guess being unemployed right now works since I have a hard time sleeping. At least I have a place I can come and get the REAL story.

Brightest Blessings!
