Why has my year old cat lost her two upper fangs? |
|
Is that normal? Her gums don't appear swollen or red but she sure looks weird when she yawns. I see no sign of breakage. Poor girl.

1. Did they just come out on their own? |
|
I have a 7 year old cat who had to have his top two fang teeth removed by the doctor because they had decay. I was really sad about it and he does look sort of silly when he yawns now. Anyway, the doctor said the fang teeth were fairly common teeth to have to be removed.
If they came out on their own, I would have a vet take a look. I'm just all about the vet bills.

2. Yeah, first the right one, then the left. |

She has a tendency to run wildly towards me when I come out of a room. She banged her head on the door real good not too long ago. I thought it could be that.

They might have been weakened by decay and then the blow finished them off. Poor kitty. I'm sure she'll be fine without them, though. My cat actually needed to ... er... curb his eating and it hasn't slowed him down a bit!

4. I would take the cat to the vet just in case the teeth didn't fully come |
|
out and she doesn't get an infection. I never heard of this. My one cat had to have an upper incisor pulled as it was badly infected. He had been a feral and was very beaten up when I got him.

5. A word from the honorary DU cat veterinarian............ |
|
it's awfully strange to lose such major teeth at only a year old. Better take kitty in and get that mouth checked out by your vet. I only rarely see dental disease severe enough to cause tooth loss in cats under about 5 (except for the teeny little front teeth).
