My AT&T cellphone switched to Cingular |
|
about ten minutes after NPR had news of the FCC approval yesterday, and stayed there for the better part of the day. I was moving around, and was using at least three different antennas. It has since changed back to AT&T.
Did this happen to anyone else? Or was Rod Serling only hanging around my Twilight Zone yesterday?

2. AT&T now has all kinds of roaming capability |
|
My phones go to Cingular and Verizon networks all the time. It's nothing to be concerned about and won't add charges to your bill. It's apparently something they've done to help minimize dropped calls and allow better coverage in fringe areas.

Your phone will display the logo of whatever company's tower that you are picking up. MOST plans won't charge you roaming for this, but make sure that your particular plan will not charge you for this. As for the other guys phone displaying verizon, that is weird because AT&T and Cingular are both GSM providers, while Verizon is CDMA technology. They are not compatible and hence cannot share towers.

I just thought it was very strange that the logo changed within minutes of the news announcemnet. I have never had that happen around here before, and the first place I noticed it was at the top of Laurel Mountain (Route 30 in SOmerset County, PA), within a mile of several large AT&T antennas. There is a big booster/ relay installation there, and I think they have a cell antenna, as well.
Hence the Rod Serling Twilight Zone reference.
