..we head to Home Depot early (I went last night) to stock up on hurricane supplies. Then if it misses, we head back to Home Depot to return everything and get our money back. :)

8. I was reading that the last hurricane of this size (in '98 I think) took

the Carribean route and killed more than 11,000 people! Many have still not been found. And of course we all remember Andrew.

This storm looks like it's about the size of Texas! Stay tuned.

9. NYC coastal vicinity here and I am making preparations

Nothing big - just making sure I have candles and batteries and extra water set aside. Figuring out where to go with my kids if we take a direct hit.

10. If I lived in Nags Head, the Outer Banks or Virginia Beach

I would be a bit nervous and stock up on some bottled water and matches and batteries today.

I remember Camille back in the 70's which was one of the very few hurricanes to really affect the D.C. area with more than just a storm. The town of Occoquan, VA was completely flooded up to the third street in town (it's a tiny town). We lived in Woodbridge close by and were on high ground but we lost our water supply for 3 days due to the reservoir cracking. We were scooping water from our back yard pool and using it. We also lost our "Woodbridge" that year when the Route 1 bridge over the Occoquan river washed out, and a smaller bridge over the Occoquan at Route 123 was completely washed out.

We'll definitely have to watch this one.

Banks! Say...200 or more miles inland. My relatives just moved away from the Outer Banks. It might turn out to be a real Godsend.

We haven't had a direct hit where I am since 1964, but it doesn't hurt to have a plan ready.

For those planning to evacuate, START EARLY! Those evacuation traffic jams are incredibly dangerous if a hurricane actually hits.

14. Yeah, the two roads out of the Outer Banks are narrow and clog quickly.

Better to stay put or get out early if it looks like there might be a direct hit. Of course, many of the locals don't get all that worked up about these things and usually just hunker down. But I wouldn't take a chance with this storm....wherever she is ultimately headed.

If you are unable to evacuate, board the windows, and stock up on anything but the Tom Ridge-brand duct tape - have batteries, water, the usual. Blankets, dry non-perishable foods...

Stay strong! If we're hit, we'll get through it okay.

We live in Washington State, but Effie, Jag, and Ulex are southerners. So we're going to have a Hurricane Party when Isabel makes landfall. It apparently involves a drink called a hurricane that requires lots of booze.
