Stereotypical DUer
Just some observations I've made by reading through posts here on DU. A typical DUer almost never watches TV, except for news. No one has ever seen a reality TV show and questions the intellect of anyone who watches them. They never listen to modern popular, country, or rap music, but instead listen to classical music, or perhaps compose their own. No one here has ever read a Joan Collins, John Grisham, VC Andrews (who mysteriously keeps writing from the dead) or other high volume producing writers, but instead spend their free time reading only Pulitzer prize winning novels. Everyone has at least a Masters degree in English, authorizing them to criticize and correct everyone else about writing style and grammar. A DUer must be suspicious of anyone with a low post count, blocking out any memory of the time when they too were new. Religiously, a DUer is a non-believer who questions the sanity of anyone who chooses otherwise.

I'm sure there are many others, but those are the ones which come to mind this morning. Are there any others you've noticed? Am I the only one who sees this on here?

24. catholic rag time is another great thing
Get in line in that processional,
Step into that small confessional,
There, the guy who's got religion'll
Tell you if your sin's original.
If it is, try playin' it safer,
Drink the wine and chew the wafer,
Two, four, six, eight,
Time to transubstantiate!

God bless you, Tom Lehrer

6. Boy, I miss about all of those...
But I HATE the misspellings that are rampant on the Internet.

Not just DU, of course, though DU has its share.

Not as big into the grammar/style thing, though.

8. NASCAR fan here.
Don't watch any reality TV, but I really like the CSI stuff. Late '60s hard rock, like classical but don't listen. Don't think I've ever read a Pulitzer novelist. BS in Comp Sci.

Guess I should trundle on over to Freeperville.

10. No Masters degree here - but I'm smart and informed
Edited on Wed Oct-27-04 10:43 AM by molly
like most of us here. I have never seen a reality show - nor do I care to. I'm not always suspicious of anyone with a low post count unless my antennae detect something amiss. I love CSI, Law and Order, Lost, and a couple other enjoyable mystery-thinker type shows. I generally turn on C-Span first thing in the morning. I absolutely ABHOR those who label us DEMS insisting we must be poor to be one. I drive a Discovery simply because I haven't worked in 3 years and cannot afford a new car - the Discovery is paid off. When I am finished with my cancer treatment (just starting), I hope to work again - probably not in IT since my job is somewhere overseas.

15. Wow...I don't fit the bill at all
Watch TV (Simpsons, Law & Order, many others), enjoyed some reality TV (Big Brother and Apprentice), listen to modern music (except country), read John Grisham, no Master's Degree.

18. Cute puppies! I must not be a typical DUer, and don't hate me
because I have a low post count! I watch reality shows, don't watch the news (I get my news off the Net), read anything that might seem interesting and don't have a Masters in English. Yikes! What am I doing here? Clearly, I'm out of my element. LOLOLOLOL

Peace

I have a B.A. in English Lit, but I'm from south Georgia and I love college football more than life itself. I listen to Johnny Cash and I read William Faulkner.

26. Actually, I have never once watched a reality show
my favorite TV shows are The Sopranos and Entourage, so it's not like I'm spending my time watching the Nature Channel either.

And I do have a masters, but in Library Science. That means that I promote the reading of all and any books. I don't care if it's Stephen King - just read, dammit!

28. Well, let's see...
I never watch TV at all, not even news; I get all my news by reading it.

Never seen a reality show, don't want to, and I DO have to wonder about the people who like them.

Not much for "popular" music, wither, but I listen to many different kinds of music...my tastes are very eclectic.

I tend not to read much popular fiction, because most of it is pretty bad. I will admit to an occasional fondness for Stephen King, though.

No Master's in English, but I might as well have one (I dated a girl who DID have an MFA in English, and she was quite disappointed at not being able to introduce me to anything literary that I wasn't already familiar weith).

I'm not suspicious of anyone with a low post count; everyone has to start from zero, after all. The cliquishness and insularity strike me as, well, stupid.

Religiously, I'm agnostic, but some of my best friends are religious, and I respect the fact that others will believe differently than I do.

So I'm apparently slightly atypical.

Please, let's not negatively overgeneralize a population of over 50,000 posters, doing so is extremely combustible.
