My toddler son surprised me today.
Yesterday, I spent some time with him talking about the potty. He watched his Bear in the Big Blue House show about using the potty. I read him a little story about using the potty. I also showed him how his doll pees in the potty. Today, he fetched his potty, brought it over to me, and said, "potty". So I took his diaper off and he peed in the potty. I can't believe he actually requested to use the potty. I wasn't expecting him to do that just yet. I'm thinking that maybe if I continue to emphasize the use of the potty through playing with him that he will also continue to request to use the potty. We'll see any how. I'm glad to know that he at least knows how to let me know he wants to use it, which is a huge step. I don't think I can trust him to do this all the time at this point, so he is still in diapers for now. He just turned two last week, by the way.

1. He's making great progress for his age
My oldest daughter was 3.5 yrs old when she learned, and my youngest girl learned at the age of 2.5 years.

He's doing great for his age. Good luck!

3. Our little guy.....
..who will be two in just over a month has started to consistently sit on the potty with his clothes on...

Not without a diaper, yet. But he waves bye-bye to imaginary potty before he leaves the bathroom.

Hope this means he is on the way....

5. We started our son off with sitting on the potty clothed too
when he was about 18 months, maybe even younger than that. I can't really remember how young he was at that point. He has used it a couple of times in the past when we let him run around naked, so I think he kind of understands what he is supposed to do. I'm not so sure about pooping, whether he gets he is supposed to do that in the potty or not. That seems to be harder to learn for some reason. I tried teaching him about the potty two months ago too, but I decided he wasn't ready. I thought he needed to develop his language better first. Now he can say "pee-pee", "poopy" and "potty", which are words he couldn't say two months ago.

4. My 20 month old daughter
Edited on Wed Oct-27-04 12:16 PM by NewJeffCT
She loves to sit on the potty. She runs up to the bathroom door and says, "wee wee, potty, up" She even tries to un-do her pants and pull them down before she goes up. My mom (who watches her during the day since she retired early this year...) has gotten her to pee a few times on the potty when she has noticed my daughter waking up with a dry diaper.

Heck, if you try to take her off the potty after you put her on, she screams like she's in Abu Graib prison...

but, I've heard girls are usually faster than boys on this stuff.

7. Thanks... I hope so.
He's my first child so I've never tried to potty train anyone before. I'm trying to make it as fun and as interesting for him as I possibly can.

8. Bless you!
My son is three and he's now pee trained, but will rarely poop in the toilet (unless I manage to catch him, but he often waits until I'm really busy, then goes off and hides). He's been chronically stuck in the house the past two months because I never exactly know when the poop will hit his underwear. Smart kid- knows his alphabet for a year now, knows his colors, talks great, a train expert, you name it, but it is still Mr. Anal Retentive.

It'll happen and if my patient attitude is ever rewarded one day, I'll being getting quite a big payoff.

9. Same here!
My son turned 3 in July, pee trained very quickly, but REFUSES to poop on the toilet. His doctor said boys often do this, and it will click at some point. I am so aggravated---he loves Thomas and I keep bribing him with Thomas stuff to no avail.
