Time for total honesty: I hope the Red Sox lose tonight.
Crazy, right? It has to do with a 20 year old promise.

20 years ago, my friend Dave and I promised that, no matter where we were in the world and what we were doing, if the Sox were going to win the thing, we would be together at the Cask & Flagon by Fenway in Boston. When Dave got married and went off on his honeymoon, we were both grousing because the Sox were in the ALCS...and if they won, he wouldn't be around to fulfill the promise. The Yankees took care of that one.

So here we are, but Dave has a newborn son, and his wife has an appointment she cannot break, so he has to stay home tonight and take care of the kid. I am keeping my promise, and will drive an hour outside the city to be with him to watch the game.

If they win, I will have been with him and kept my promise, but will have missed the chance to be in the city on the Big Day. If they lose, we can get together tomorrow at the Cask in the proper fashion.

This is all the more important because he is moving to Atlanta this winter for a better job and a bigger house, so they can have another child.

The Sox need to lose tonight, because Dave and I need to be at the Cask when the deal goes down.

6. I'd love to see them bring it home for the win
but losing 2 to acheive that goal doesn't sit well with me. Part of me is expecting them to throw the game tonight.

13. I really doubt it
A Yankee story like mine would be more like, "I made plans to meet my friend Dave in the same place we've met for every other World Series win. It's an old tradition."

This is different.

12. A noble cause, BUT
When you can close the deal, you have to do it as soon as you can. No screwing around.

Yankees suck. Go Sox.

and asked him if he'd pitch badly and screw up his intended free-agent bid so that Will and friend can toss a few at the Cask. He said, "fuck you." Sorry.

19. But...
If tonight is the night the Sox were supposed to win and they lose, and then the Cards take the next four, then you will be responsible for the new curse of the Pitt. All it takes is one person to screw with the cosmos and wham...that's all she wrote. Can you live with that?

22. Boston Globe lead story for Thursday
"Two shitheads were butchered in a local tavern after the World Series game last night. According to police reports, the two unidentified men brought a 4 month old baby to the Cask & Flagon near Fenway. The mother of the child, upon hearing this, went berzerk and chopped them into catmeat with a rusty machete."

25. Tell Dave to bring the kid
The Cask & Flagon on the night the Sox win the Series is a perfectly reasonable place to have a newborn. Besides, the little bugger needs to be indoctrinated properly. Think how great it will look in his baby book.

34. Where is Mrs. Dave's appointment?
Would anyone chop her into catmeat if she brought the newborn along?

Seriously, big fella, think about how you'd feel if they did indeed honk tonight -- and then, well, you know... :scared:

28. I agree
I don't want to see a damn sweep. I want excitement and drama. But then again, I don't want to see the Sox lose either. So I guess I'll be ok with a sweep. I would have just have wanted to see a good series.

27. Sorry Will, I hope that they seal it up tonight. I remember 1986.
And not too long ago the Yankees had a 3-0 series lead and they blew it.
Sox have to wrap it up tonight. HAVE TO!

... I can't support you on this one. The Sox cannot afford to open the door even the slightest bit for the Cards, otherwise the Curse is on again.

it's an incredible sweet story. Have a good time with your friend tonight and the way I see it...either way you win, either way you get to spend time with your friend and you'll have a great story to tell that kid when it gets older. :)
