When The Red Sox Win...
then being a Red Sox fan will no longer be special. You won't have the right to claim that you're a better fan than anyone because your team never wins the big one. You'll be just like every other fan on the planet. You'll join the Marlins, Diamondbacks, and Angels' fans in the recent winner's club house.

No more noble suffering.

No more uniqueness.

No more "pity the poor Red Sox".

Now, all fans will hate you for your success. They will come out hard against the Champs.

The Cubs will become America's new favorite underdog team.

1. I don't want to be a better fan.
I just want to see my team win it before I die.

I just want them to win. They haven't done it in 86 years. It's time.

4. as a Yankee fan supporting the Sox in this Series . . .
I can't help but wonder . . . is there any chance that the Cardinals could do to the Sox what the Sox did to the Yankees? . . . I know it's highly improbable, but think about the cosmic forces that have been arrayed against the Sox for so long . . . could they rear their ugly heads one more time and inflict the cruelest defeat yet? . . . and how would the Red Sox Nation respond? . . .

it won't happen, of course . . . this is Boston's year . . . I just hope they win it at Fenway so the fans can participate in the celebration directly . . .

Go Sox! . . . :)

8. I think it's entirely possible
I was saying last night that if the Cardinals come back and win I will believe in the curse, but I now think you gotta give the Cards more respect than that. They could very well come back and win this series and it really wouldn't have anything to do with anything except their own skills.

Sorry, but you don't root for the team that came back against your team from 3-0, especially when it's the fucking Red Sox.

13. the whole concept that winning will ruin the red sox is ludicrous
I'm so excited I'm on the verge of simply freaking out. The greatest comeback in sports history followed by a World Series victory and then a massive regional party. After this we can gloat for a bit and then work on the next championship...and the one after that...just like with the Patriots. Would I love to see the Cubs win it all? sure...as long as it's a down year for the Sox!

This crap about us secretly wanting the sox to lose or enjoying the attention of it all is just that. crap. We want to win and we're going to enjoy winning and we'll still follow the game obsessively and we'll still sell out Fenway and we'll still enjoy winning and obsess about losing.

Anyone who thinks otherwise doesnt live in the area or understand the passion the fans feel for the sox. It's like the "curse" BS. None of us believe there is any such thing. We know that the team was never properly managed until now. Heck the "curse" didnt even exist when i was a kid and then about ten years ago some hack baseball writer puts together a book that is poorly researched and inaccurate to support a ludicrous "theory" that has done nothing but provide fodder for Fox sports. It's a crock and we know it's a crock and we'll all be ecstatic to never have to hear about the stupid thing again, but more importantly we'll be happy to have finally won it all and we'll knwo that this team really managed to capture the hearts and minds of Red Sox Nation in a way unmatched since the 1967 Impossible Dream and we'll tell our kids about Curt Schilling's ankle and Pedro Martinez's performance in game 3, and Mark Bellhorn's homeruns and Damon's Grand Slam and Manny Ramirez coming back from 2 horrendous errors to throw out Larry Walker at the plate.

And we'll also talk about how the hometown team was followed up by the Hometown hero John Kerry, a local guy who volunteered to serve his country in war time, who valiantly stood before Congress to speak out against that very same war, who worked for the environment, who worked against nuclear proliferation and government corruption and who finally put a stop to the republican war machine and its group of neo-conservative cultural warriors by defeating George Bush in the 2004 election.

And when that is all done in early 2005 we'll watch the New England Patriots complete the single greatest football season in history and repeat as World Champions to seal their place as a true NFL Dynasty.

15. Six months from now we'll still be toasting the Patriots
Edited on Wed Oct-27-04 03:41 PM by WilliamPitt
I know you're hoping devoutly for some measure of misery to befall the city whose team so convincingly humiliated the Yankees. The fact of the matter is that we are not New York; we don't need bigger better louder more to be happy. One championship will more than suffice. We get a ten-year grace period at a minimum.

Keep trying, though.

18. None whatsoever
Steinbrenner will open his checkbook and buy you a whole new team, the Yankee payroll will balloon to $225 million, and maybe the tactic that has failed your team the last four years will get you a championship.

I, on the other hand, will enjoy the five framed Boston Globe sports pages on my wall. Four of them will be from each of the Sox victories in the World Series. The fifth will be in the center of the cluster - the Globe sports page from the game where we beat the Yankees in the greatest comeback/collapse in the modern history of sport. The Yankees could win the next 25 championships, but I will always have those framed pages on my wall.

It's pretty clear you don't get it. I feel sorry for you. I really do.

19. Okay, Okay
We'll see. NY Rangers fans said the same thing in 1994. They hadn't won a championship in 40 years. Since 1994, the Rangers can't even make the playoffs, and are the fans happy? No.

22. It's sad that such happiness makes you angry
You can't just enjoy the incredible history and fantastic success of your team, but instead keep trying to come up with these theories about how Boston fans will be miserable no matter what. You've got, what, 26 rings? That doesn't satisfy you, apparently. You've got Mantle and Gherig and DiMaggio and Ruth and Jeter. The entire history of the sport is woven with Yankee blue, but still this does not make you happy.

It's a strange little twitch you've got there, and speaks to a higher order of sadness and despair in your own life. Seeking misery in others to salve your own pains is a sick way to live.

And, P.S., I can't speak for every Red Sox fan, but it is entirely possible that if we win the World Series, I will never give a damn about baseball for the rest of my life. I'm sorry if that steals your hope that I and others will feel sorrow and pain, but there it is.

24. I'm Not Angry At All
I am disappointed, but I'm not angry. I'm just telling you from experience that when you win, things will change dramatically. I'm not trying to ruin your fun. Your specialness and sense of purpose will be lost.

27. Heh
You sure do a good imitation of angry and bitter, dude.

As for 'sense of purpose,' I have to tell you that the Sox fortunes are about eight million slots down on the list of things that give me a sense of purpose. One win was all we asked for. We just might get it, and we can check that off the list.

The Patriots won in 2001, and didn't make the playoffs the next year. Nobody in this town gave a crap. We had our long-sought championship, and it was more than enough.

29. Red Sox fans will always define themselves in comparison
to the Yankees. That's why they are bitter now and forever. Their passion is more as "anti-Yankee" fans than as Red Sox fans.

25. Yavin is right to a degree...
the charm in rooting for the Sox will diminish a bit. True, Sox fans will forever relish their victories, both over the Yanks and in the WS (which they haven't won as of yet, but I believe they will), but the 'loveable losers' won't be the same. Like Yavin said, they will become fairly ordinary, and being the reigning champs next year, everyone will be gunning for them. Comes with the territory.

As for being okay with the Yanks winning another 25 championships, I say, "Bull!" A couple of stunning and dramatic victories over the Sox would quickly wipe it away and Sox fans will go back to being bitter against the Yanks. You may have won this round, but we're far, far ahead in winning the war...

26. Look At The Tampa Bay Buccaneers
They were the NFL's version of the loveable losers, and ever since they've won the SB in 2003, they've slipped back into nothingness.

if the Sox turned into a dynasty, winning three or four championships in a row, and people began to hate them...
